I was digging around and came across my copy of Moo3. I can't believe
I bought that tripe when it came out. Anyway, every now and then i
pull it out. I see there are a boatload of fan mods out there and an
official patch. Do they actually make the game worth playing again?
If so, which are the must have mods I should get? I've played GalCiv
I and 2 and enjoyed them alot.

Thanks,
Eric

I believe the official patch is 1.02 or 1.2... in either case, it does
fix most of the problems with the initial version. There are some
issues still present, but the game is at least playable.

I haven't played Moo 3 in a while (my brother currently has it), but I
recommend looking for the mods that claim to be usabilty patches or
balance patches. Most likely, there's an faq stating which one is the
best.

No. I tried this a while ago, and the game is still basically a spreadsheet
with the cell data hidden in mini tables fifty million clicks apart. No
modding has fixed that, AFAIK.

Stick with GalCiv if you like Civ-in-space type games. Or better still, go
back to MoO 1 or 2.

With the user mods and patches (I think the atari forum is still up go
there) it plays qutie well, though clearly it is still not for
everyones tastes.

The macro management experiment was both a failure and a success in my
opinion. Of course you have to want to leave the details to the AI,
but honestly, that makes for a more level playing field afterall, and
there is still room for you to micro if you really want to, only that
it is an annoying pain in the ass depending on how often you want to
do it.

I often found myself playin GC2 or SEIV or other space 4x and wishing
it were more like MoO3, honestly, they did get alot right after the
fans were able to fix the worst of the glitches. Really I can't stand
GC2 anymore, its far far too easy even on impossible settings due
entirely to a piss poor design choice in having an 'open' universe
since the AI is completely incapable of dealing with it.

Sword of the Stars is another interesting 4x which is nominally more
challenging, but does not contain the same depth in empire building as
the others do, and the real time combat is not for everyone either.
