mountain
For extra credit : what's the type of the arty piece directly behind
us and how come nobody spots it the first time they see the picture

You mean they have organized warfare *today* ?
Well, after thinking this over for a bit I think Megiddo (Armageddon)
might be a good candidate - it's the bottleneck point for any army
coming or going from the ME to the rich Nile lands and vice versa.

I wonder what a statistical analysis would show? Figures by continent
and region for "average distance from major historical battlefield
site?"
Europe has gotta be the king, right?

It's almost certainly the middle east. They had a few thousand years
head start before there was any organized warfare in europe.

I guess it matters what our choice of "region" is - and cherry-picking
is going to be the term of art. If, on the other hand, we have to go by
*continent*, then figures for the ME would be diluted by the vast
distances of either Africa or Asia.

Northern Virgina is chock-a-block with battlefields. 9 hours driving
gets me there.
all at least noted and most preserved. and one can find excellent bar-
b-q pits for eats.
{mmmmm allman's in fredericksburg} with a gallon bucket of pulled
pork, a bottle of sauce, a pile of burger rolls and a few joints ,
plus there are the military museums in and around D.C and richmond,
the army ordnance museum at aberdeen,
the marine museum at quantico, the marine raider museum in richmond
the coast arty, casemate museum at fort monroe.
around the richmond-petersberg siege lines one can still find the
trench/breastworks all over the area and it seems if they cross your
property you can't flatten them out. at least no one does.
here around boston we have a few revolutionary sites {lex-concord,
siege of boston} but except for the lex-concord and bunker hill
nothing is a park. they are plenty of king phillips war sites but they
have been lost to developement.
in my town {dedham mass.} a rather large for its time battle between
the dedhamites and narragansetts took place in 1676 and it is
completely unmarked and maybe 10 of us in town {pop 23,000} know where
and when it happened
New York state is doing a fine job with its french & indian, rev and
1812 sites along the hudson, mohawk valley and canadian border ,
canada sucks, they preserved nothing and barely mark them, at best a
single monument.
i wonder if gifty has bothered to visit the lone battlefield actually
in vermont , that of hubbardton, a small affair but worthy of a small
museum , Vermont's big event Bennington didn't even happen there it
actually happened in New York.
yeah battlefields are cool. |
