Fortunately the error wasn't big.
I just mailed an aquamarine, just one, to a person I don't know. Out of
force of habit, I typed this month's work password in as the addressee. It
was a real character name! Not on the armory, so low level. Probably a
bank alt, but what the hey. It could have been worse.

I have done that occasionally, where the auto-completion gave me the
wrong person. In my case it was always someone on my friend list whose
name started the same as one of my alts.
In each case (that I know of...) the person returned the stuff with a
note that I probably meant it for someone else. Fortunately I only put
honest people on my friend list...
I'm not sure i would do the same in reverse though, simply because I
would possibly not even know about it. I get literally hundreds of
items in the mailbox every day, and use the "open all" of CT_Mail to get
them. If there was a bogus box in there, I probably would not even
notice.
I have taken the approach of no longer adding anyone to my friend list,
and emptied out all old ones though. I send too much stuff around the
mails to want to make that mistake yet again...

Probably isn't a real character, I've spent stuff to typoed versions of my
characters names which I'm fairly sure don't exist, 30 days later I get it
back. I have the feeling it's possible to send stuff to characters that
don't exist, at least so it seems.

Hehe I've done that so many times, 2 of my alts start with S, as do 2 of a
friend's alts, so he's had my misdirected mail a few times What's more
confusing is a friend who used to be in my guild made characters with very
similar names to guildmates and joined the guild with them... not only did
we sometimes confuse him for the real guildies on guildchat, but some
people would get him on their mail autocomplete too, he used to make a joke
out of saying thanks for the gifts lol (as far as I'm aware he always
passed them onto the correct recipient, just had a laugh over it first)

Not sure about that. I have misspelled a name when mailing and gotten a
message that the character does not exist.

Auto-complete works on guildmates also. That makes a serious problem for
many.

It does, but it will take the person on your friend list before the person
in your guild (e.g. if you have an alt in your friends list and a guildmate
where the first 2 characters are the same but third is different. If you
only type the first two characters, you would then get your alt since that's
on your friendslist).

If your password can be used as a character name in WoW, your password is
too weak <ducks 'n' runs>
Anyway, you're not the only to have sent mail to the wrong people. I
fortunately only remember having it done once, and it was only one primal
water. I sent a letter to the person asking if he would please return it,
and he did.

Ahh, interesting then, I just assumed that I'd sent it to a nonexistant
name when I mistyped and got it back after 30 days. Weird name if there
really was someone of that name!

A friend (really! it's not me ) has done this a couple a times, and
even emailed the person explaining what happened. The unintended
recipient merrily ignored the message and kept the item/gold. Gotta
love people sometimes. Fortunately it's never been anything huge.
I am *extremely* paranoid when entering destinations for my game mail.
My banker has only a friends list of his clients (my other
characters). Other than that he's a pariah, master of a memberless
guild.

I've done something like this before, twice, before I started to
become more careful.
The first time I mailed stuff to my brother. No big deal, he returned
it once he got it an hour later.
The second time I mailed it to another guildy. Our guild is nothing
but alts, and I unfortunately didn't know whos alt this guy was.
Asked around a few times but no one ever claimed ownership. 30 days
later, all my items were returned to me. |

when it comes to mailing errors, here are two funny one ...
well, depending on your point of view...
a) I obviously can't remember the names of my own newly created chars.
I've sent tons of stuff to Sarona instead of to Sanora. Or was it the
other way around?
Anyway, I got it back after a month because the other, wrong one, was
not played it seems.
b) this one was hurtful.
I transferred to a new server at the end of November with my main. I
stocked up on items, etc on the old server so I had a *full* inventory
(I even threw away low cost stuff like shiny fich scale, ankhs, etc on
the shaman).
Upon arriving I created some alts as mail holders. Sent them the stuff
in nice big mails (multi-mail-system has just been introduced, you
know?). Checked the alts if stuff had arrived at them, moved some stuff
to their banks, etc.
At the end of December the stuff still in the mail should have been
returned, shouldn't it?
Well, it wasn't.
Wrote a GM ticket. Got the usual help, i.e. nothing really helpful. Even
if it hurt, decided to cope with the losses and try to get much of the
stuff again.
YESTERDAY, suddenly the inbox on my main was very full. All the stuff
had returned. ALL OF IT. 30 days later than expected, but anyway.
Short list:
- 600-800 adamantite ore (1000g worth?)
- 33 large prismatic shards (1200g worth?)
- 40-60 large planar essences (~500g worth?)
- 9 primal mooncloths, 8 netherweb silk (400g or so)
- 100-120 arcane dust (nearly nothing, 100g or so)
- some other stuff
on the one hand, I'm pretty excited to have it all back (hey, it's about
3000g). On the other hand, I'm somehow pissed off.
Now I just have to find out what to do with all the stuff ...

Same thing happened to me, except mine came back a couple of weeks ago, I
guess something got rather messed up in the mail system and it's gradually
catching up on returning mail, not at all helpful!

I read about this on the forums. People were talking about their mail
disappearing after 30 days rather than being returned as before. I started
checking my alts religiously to make sure I didn't miss that window and
would spend the 30c to remail the stuff to a different alt.
GTK they've fixed it!
