MAH-JONGG and MAHJONG, which one came first? What are the earliest
records of each of these English terms?

Cheers!

Intuitive thinking only:

"Jong" came AFTER "Jongg".

Jongg was trade-marked because of "Chiang" which sounds good and has
an army general or high ranking connotation and used in book titles
for the Sparrow game. (some-one mentioned a copy of 1912-13).
Jong came into being when people started dropping the useless and
meaningless second "g" knowingly or unknowingly.

I looked for jong in 2 Chinese-English dictionaries and I could not
find the word or an official meaning of jong.

BabCCock wanted JONGG to sound like ZHONG. which means luck and thus
even less meaning or really wronGG.

My favorite word is "wrongg" (i.e. both jongg and jong)

Cheers.......AL
