Hello,
I was looking at LDDB and was rather puzzled by the entries for the
Jungle Book LD. There appear to be two anniversary editions: one CAV
and one CLV but the aspects seem to be different. One is listed as
P&S, whilst the other is listed as "tv size". Is this a mistake?
Should they both be the same aspect, and if not, why did Disney
release the title in two different aspect ratios?
Thanks. |

P&S = "tv size" = NTSC = 1.33:1
See: <http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0061852/laserdisc>
It's a 1967 movie. |

LDDb listings for 4:3 aspect ratios tend to be very confused. Genuine
4:3 productions, video or Academy Ratio film, will often be marked
"pan & scan", as will open-matte transfers of soft-matte 1.85 films,
or the 4:3 versions of Super 35 films. Conversely, obvious crop jobs
may be marked Academy/"TV size". In some cases, too, there's real
controversy about the aspect ratios of films, & Disney's practices
with regard to their animated features have not always been
particularly helpful in that regard. As an example, two versions of
"Lady and the Tramp" were photographed, one widescreen and one
Academy ; as I recall, some 4:3 video transfers are the Academy
version, while others are panned-and-scanned from the wide version.

Yes, they can be confusing (including for myself sometimes).
IMDb gives:
Aspect ratio
1.37 : 1 (negative ratio)
1.75 : 1 (intended ratio)
So for a 1.33:1 aspect, could it be the original negative (Academy
Ratio) or a P&S version of the 1.75:1?
I try to keep the information consistent but a *lot* of people are
troubled by video ratios and letterboxing, leading to numerous wrong
updates that I'm trying to catch on the fly.
I'm trying to stick to this as much as possible:
http://www.lddb.com/help_ratio.php
I consider, as a convention, a 1.33:1 version of a Super 35 as P&S.
Rgds,
Julien
