Post subject: Iron Storm (Working Designs) for Saturn - currently $1
Archived from groups: rec>games>video>sega (more info?)

I'm selling the best strategy wargame ever released for the Sega
Saturn, "Iron Storm". This was one of the few pure wargames released
by Working Designs. I'm starting out out on Ebay for just a buck, no
reserve. (there are several others there listed for $32+)

Item # 120030764567

There are a few other ones on there, but they are listed between $32
and $45. It's a hard to find game, one that you won't find at the yard
sales and such. No reserve - if it goes for a buck, it goes for a
buck. I just want someone else out there to get to experience the 200+
hours of fantastic gameplay like I got to. Here's the description:

This is a Near Mint condition copy of Iron Storm, the best classic
strategy hex wargame for the Sega Saturn. Like many of the best Saturn
games, this one was brought to us by Working Designs. In original box,
with original 25 page instruction manual. There are no scratches of any
consequence on the disk, which maintains an almost pristine,
mirror-like quality, and boots up without any problem on the Saturn
system. There is one crack on the back side of the plastic of the case,
about 3" long, but the case still seems structurally sound. (doesn't
come apart when you push on all sides) I probably played this game for
over 200 hours, and had a lot of fun with it. I suppose that I could
describe it as a "mental orgasm for just about any armchair general".
Here's what it says on the back of the box: "Get ready to trip, and
we're talking hard! We're putting over 500 weapons, troops and
artillery at your command. We're loading you up with prototype
hardware, sporting weaponry never before seen. We're giving you a
chance to experience the first realtime 3-D rendered visuals of battles
ripped right from the pages of history. And, we're handing you the keys
to over 50 of the most crucial confrontations in the biggest war ever
fought. We'll even let you pick the country to play (Germany, Japan or
America) But, once you've picked sides, we're cutting you loose.
History is in your hands. Lives are at stake. Will you champion
freedom, or blow it and screw up the world forever?"

I have owned Iron Storm since I bought it new many years ago.In my
opinion it is the best war stratagy sim to ever hit any console.I have
played countless hours and have never grown tired of it.Imagine playing
as one of the Axis powers. If you play Germany you get to invade Russia
and dominate the world if you play right, with the proper stratagy. In
the end Germany and Japan square off in India for world domination. You
can play either as America,Japan,or Germany.Depending as who you play
decides who your Allies will be.If you play as America you get to
invade Japan if you play it right. You get to change history.I could go
on and on how good this game is.I only hope someday it will make a
comeback on the XBOX 360.Imagine how good it would be in High
Definition, with the next generation graphics.I am not plugging his Ebay
sale I'm just saying if you want a great War Sim..this is the one to
get.

didn't realize it was part of the same series. i'll have to go check
it out now.

i didn't really like the one on the saturn, though. i'll stick with
military madness or dragon force for strategy.

There actually is a US release of one of its sequels on the Xbox. I
forget the name at the moment, but it is still in the romanized Japanese
name.

Your right about Dai Senryaku 7.I bought it about a year ago.I got it
at EB Games. The only thing about it I really enjoyed was the
price@$19.99.The game is similar to Iron storm except it has no
historical significance. You cannot change history,as to how history
actually unfolded.I like Dai Senryaku 7 but don't get the punch I got
from Iron Storm. That is why I would love to see Iron Storm on the
360.Have you played Sniper Elite on the XBox?This is a great sniping
game that gives you the chance to
change history in Berlin during WWII. Advanced Wars for the Game Boy
Advanced is also similar to Iron Storm in gameplay as is Herzog Zwei
for the Genisis. All in all my favorite war games are WWII games ..Bruce

I haven't played Sniper Elite, it's going to be one that retains its
value though as the local stores can never keep it in stock. People
love it, I burned out on FPS gameplay again after Halo briefly revived
my affections.

Herzog Zwei is a futuristic RTS with transforming ships like Macross and
bases to build back-up. As far as I recall, Iron Storm is turned based,
but that historical element is really all I like about it. I didn't
realize the other Daisen games didn't have the historical link, that'll
save me some money down the road.

You are right about Herzo Zwei.It has been a long time since I played
it.I just put in on and played for a few minutes.I guess I have so many
games and systems that I forget about some games,Ha!.I believe you can
never have enough of each.Any way,if you like war games Dai Senryaku 7
is not a bad game.It is turned base and does have it's moments.IMHO it
has a fairly hard learning curve and of course it has no historical
significance. You can play as 1 of 4 armies, red, blue, green, or
yellow. You must occupy all the enemy capitals to win the game. You lose
if the enemy occupies yours. The major down fall is that you play with
modern armies,so in essence you create your own history without the
benfit of history being already made before you play the game.Again you
can't change history. That alone diminishes,in my opinion the fun and
challange ofthe game. I hope to see Iron Storm brought forward on the
new consoles. There would be so much more that could be added to the
game, plus I think the company that brought it back would clean up in
the sales department. You can get Dai Senryaku 7 probabley pretty cheap
used.Like I said Ibought mine new for under $20.00.As far as Sniper
Elite goes it plays in both 3rd and 1st person modes. It cycles back and
forth between the two.It is extremley challanging and fun.Plus it has
some cool cheats, like a silencer mode and a explosive round mode.Of
course I only use them when I'm not serious about winning the game.I
have played it on all difficulty modes and believe me,I am a war
veteran, the hard mode is extremly hard.I hope you can find it.It won't
dissapoint...Bruce

It's no tthe viewpoint that has me burned out, it's the wonky FPS
controls that I'm sick of. Some games handle it better than others,
but I'm basically just tired of worrying about headshots while rolling
around on a unicycle. I'd rather have less crosshair control and more
character control (with current controller types' limitations).
Gunvalkyrie is more my style.

For that price, I should try to pick it up. I have a feeling that
anything remotely Japanese on the first Xbox is going to be relatively
hard to find soon. As for the historical aspect, I thought about my
statement after I posted it and it's silly. Iron Storm isn't
simulating real battles, it's setting up grid based/turned based
battles and creating a resemblance to the battles in WWII. So, the
appeal is an illusion either way. I'd rather play a game because I
like how it plays, so Dai Senryaku 7 might be just as much fun
afterall.

I'm sure you would have fun with Dai Senryaku 7.It after all is similar
in game play to Iron Storm.I have been playing Iron Storm for the past
week. The only problem is I have to replace the batteries in all 3 of my
Saturns.I have 2 Action Replays and 1 Memory Card Plus and not a one
seems to work.If any one out there knows how to get them to work please
let me know.I have cleaned them but to no avail.Thats what I get for
not playing my Saturn for about a year.Maybe a topic of the 10 best
American gams for the Saturn would be worth a try. This system really in
my opinion took a good verbal beating by a lot of people.I have played
some great games and also some bad games released for the Saturn.Bel if
your're raeding this I know you have a favorite list. These are my top
10
1-Iron Storm..For it's historical value, and replay value
2-Tomb Raider..Started a cult following..Not graphically as sharp as
PS1
3-Daytona USA..For its time a great racer
4-World Series 98..Excellant Baseball sim,had best game play of all
competitors.
5-Tie-Panzer Dragoon Series..All 3 are excellent shooters with the
added rpg elementof Saga.
6-Astal..Beautiful side scroller, showed what the Saturn was capable of.
7-Nights Into Dreams..Showed how good the Saturn was with 3D
8-Pandemonium..This is a great side scroller with pseudo3D.I think PS1
had it also.
9-Magic Knight Rayearth.Beautiful RPG.
10-Dragon Force..Great turned based war sim.
All these are my favorites for 2 things[Fun Factor, and replay]
I have others that are great game for the Saturn. These include
Shining The Holy Arc
Shining Wisdom
Shining Force 3 U.S.A. version
I own these games in my list. All my games are U.S. versions, with a
total count of 67 games all boxed with instructions. If anyone would
like to post their favorite Saturn games,it would be an interesting
read..Thanks,Bruce

That's interesting, though I clean my other cart-based system pretty
religiously, I never really have messed with the Saturn's cart slot. I
have been getting some issues of it not recognizing the 4 Meg expansion
cart, so maybe this is why. Would something like the system slot
cleaner for the Genesis be alright for the Saturn's cart slot?

Do you know where to get the system slot cleaner for the Genisis,or can
you use cartridge cleaner in the Saturn slot.I checked and the genny
slot is way different than the Saturn slot.I have a genny hand held
cartridge slot cleaner that in no way would work.Maybe an emory board
covered with a thin peice of paper and some cartridge cleaner would do
the job.I don't know,I'm open to any sugestions.Itwould be nice to get
those memory cartidges working again.I hate to say it but the PS1 cards
were way more reliable, even if you could'nt use cheat codes from
them. However I still love my Saturn. It had many unique games..Bruce

From what I've seen, the Saturn cart port builds up carbon and needs to
be cleaned with something that can get the crud off the pins
periodically. I used a folded up piece of computer printer paper (the
good quality stuff) and some rubbing alcohol, don't stop until the black
stops coming off.

I'd say that mid 60s is a good number of solid titles for the
Saturn in the US. There are some stinkers from third parties,
especially ones that made their business to port PS1 games quickly over
to the Saturn's totally different architecture. You just can't get the
type of games the Saturn has on it at quite the same quality on the PS1
or N64 (the same could be said of their libraries too, so don't blow
this out of proportion lurkers). The only game off hand that I'd
mention that you didn't would be Gun Griffon, though I would have a hard
time parting with any of my games.

I don't think a Genesis cart cleaner will fit in the slot unless you gut
it and cut down the actual cleaning part. Even then, the Saturn port
has a metal break in the middle of it, so you would have to carve a slot
into the Genesis cleaner to make it fit. It's just easier to fold up a
piece of paper, and it works just as well. Just don't let the paper
start fraying in there, that'll be a pain to clean up. If you have an
air compressor, 100PSI can do wonders with a little alcohol in the port.
