Internet Backgammon problem

Hi Jimmy - thanks for the reply!

I tried what you said, and when that didn't work I tried uninstalling all
games to see if I could reinstall them. Now I have no games. Set up will not
continue because it cannot copy the zClientM file even though I searched for
it and put a copy on my desktop. Also, it seems my XP install disc has become
useless since I installed SP2. Do you know of a work-around?

Eww. Shouldn't delete things like that. Sometimes utilities find
sections of harmless files that correspond to the segments of malware
that are used for the search routine. Either rename the file, move to
another folder or isolate onto removable media. Doesn't Spy sweeper have
some sort of "Vault" or quarantine it can put suspect files into?

I hope you didn't run the setup for installing the whole OS. When it
sees the newer SP2 files it will refuse to continue IN THE SAME FOLDER
to avoid a potentially dangerous mix of different file versions. You may
need to get hold of a SP2 CD and get someone to make a slipstreamed CD
with your OS installation disk and the SP2 disk.

Since SpySweeper caused the issue, see if it has a restore point
saved that you can return to from within that software, otherwise..

Since that problem just started happening recently, try a System Restore.

Even if you don't need it right away, a slipstreamed CD might be a
lifesaver at some point in the future. Make sure your slipstreamed CD is
made from the CD that goes with your Windows XP Certificate Of
Authenticity (COA). If you have installed SP2 it would probably be
better to use the slipstreamed CD for any system file recoveries.

You WILL need a Windows XP installation CD that includes an I386 folder
AND the full SP2 download (or CD). Make sure you have a hard copy
(printed, COA or written) of your Windows XP product key. The computer
making the slipstreamed CD will need to have software that can burn an
ISO image to a CD, like Nero or Easy CD Creator. You may need to
reactivate your OS after a full or repair installation of your OS.

Thanks Robert - I made a slipstremed winxpsp2 disc, but I still cannot
install any games except Spider Solitare. When I try, I get multiple messages
saying certain files can't be copied (many, many files), even though I have
copies on the slipstremaed disc in the drive, and I also copied the I386 file
from the new disc into c:\ . Should I try a reinstall now with the new disc?
A repair? Any other suggestions...?

Thanks Jimmy - unfortunately System Restore is turned off. I ran sfc
/scannow, but when I try to install Internet Games the Windows Component
Wizard still says it cannot copy the same files; zclientm.ex_, znetm.dl_,
cmnclim.dl_, and so on. What would I lose if I ran an OS repair? Other
suggestions....? BTW, I'm not sure it was the Spy Sweeper scan that caused
this (I suspect operator error), so I don't want to slag their product. FWIW,
I used to be able to run the Full Service Scan at the Windows Live Safety
Centre website, but now after downloading the tools, I just get a box with a
little red x. I haven't noticed (yet) any other potentially related problems.

Hi Dave54,

You won't lose anything by doing an OS repair, unless you have encrypted
data directories, since the repair would rebuild your user account credentials.

I recommend that you enable System Restore after you complete your repair,
as in these situations System Restore is an invaluable recovery tool.

Your other issues should also be resolved after the repair is complete.
