Archived from groups: alt>games>unreal>tournament (more info?)

I wonder if Epic Games ever thought about releasing a special edition Unreal
Tournament (UT) that has basically all the UT99 maps, weapons, mods, etc but
updated to today's game engine and graphics. Additionally, having the same
gameplay could make this an ideal release. I have asked several people
what they thought about this, and needless to say this idea was well
received. Wouldn't it be cost effective to make this version of UT, as it
would not necessarily be created from scratch? Perhpas this could be ready
in 2010. Or, maybe it could be created concurrently with another version of
the game, so as to be available as an add-on (for a small price). The
overwhelming success of UT99, and the subsequent disappointing sequels only
makes one wonder why Epic has not already presented the same game, but with
the benefit of seeing it at incredible detail and realism. If realized,
this could bring new meaning to the term "unreal".

We are working some on improving the graphics, but the UT engine is pretty
limited that way. In an ideal world it would work, and I totally get what
you are saying but the realism is that the Unreal engine is a decade old and
in computer years that's steam powered (pardon the pun).

Porting old maps to new engines is *very* difficult. I've seen
individuals spend months on a faithful redo of a single map to a new
engine (using UE3 to port ONS Dawn, which was a UE2 map).

Besides, Epic is all about consoles now.

Indeed. UT3 seems to exist purely to showcase the unreal engine to other
developers, rather than a game for the community. That said, the
upcoming bonus is hopeful, but it'll need to be oustandingly awesome to
make up for the botched and unfinished release of ut3 that took six
months and 3 patches before it was of "release" quality standard.

Remember when Epic used to say "It'll be released when it's ready"?

Anybody heard any more on what the new content is supposed to be?
I've been watching Beyond Unreal since I heard mention of it, but
there still hasn't been any more info.
