I know it's basically abandoned, but it seems interesting from what
I've played. Problem is I rarely have the vaguest idea what I'm doing.
I don't suppose anyone knows of a place on the internet that has any
sort of guides for it?

I used to play IVAN a bit when it first came on the scene. Don't
discount it as an abandoned project - there are whispers that the devs
are thinking about becoming active again!

Anyway, if you find the forums from the IVAN homepage and peruse them,
you will see a thread (ivanforum Forum Index -> General Discussion ->
***** new forum ****) offering a link to the 'new' forums which are
most certainly active. The old forums were overrun with spam and what-
not - the link will tell you to go to 'Attnam DOT com' or something
along those lines.

There you will find what you seek... including a couple of fan-written
forks and mods (including a 3D variant!) etc.

Oh, that's great! I did see something about other forums on the
official site, but the link I saw there didn't work. I see there's a
wiki too. Between that and looking through the topics there, hopefully
I can get a grip on some of the more important aspects now. Thanks a
lot.

IIRC you just have to correct a couple of the template definitions in
FeLib - the angle brackets for template specialisation are in the wrong
spot.

It will compile ok for x86 32 bit.... 64 bit fails miserably due to
casting trickery between int and void *.

http://attnam.com is the new home forum. It'll take a bit of searching to
find what you're looking for - as most of the regulars are very heavily
spoiled, and casually refer to the "ommel cerumen trick" and praying to
replace missing limbs with "golden eagle feather", but it's a good
spoilerific resource.

Kain,

Do a Google - be aware it might take a few pages of other stuff but in the
past I have found bulletin boards devoted to IVAN. Also check the
sourceforge page (http://ivan.sourceforge.net/) - I recall that has useful
links as well.

Unfortunately it's been a while since I played it as I can't get it to
compile under the current version of gcc - if anyone has code that does,
please let me know - it's quick and fun (and there are SO many ways to die
that sometimes the challenge is to stay alive Smile

<spoiler>

Basically enter the underwater tunnel. Go down one level and then up again
at the other end (there is a hidden level below the middle section - but
don't bother until you're a lot more powerful). The exit is under the giant
plant (took me ages to find it (just stand on the plant and try to go up)).
From there find the town (it'll be on your map) and visit the high priest.
He'll send you off to a mine that now appears on your map. To kill the
screeching thing, travel light and quickly (forget potions - they'll just
shatter - leave them the level above to collect later). To kill Elpuri,
good luck - you'll need it (I recommend wands Smile

Work out what each god wants you to sacrifice on the altars (they are mostly
obvious). Get it right and you can have potions refilled, weapons fixed (or
hardened), angels (or other beings) wandering around with you, limbs
re-grown (or replaced) and so on as a result of prayers and sacrifices.

</spoiler>

Good luck Smile

Please, anyone who can get it to compile under the more recent versions of
GCC on Linux, please respond to the newsgroup - I'm sure I'm not the only
person with the issue Smile

Dave

G'day all,

Found it on the forums (recent - been about a year dince I last looked Sad
Download latest from CVS (Sourceforge) and do the following (in correct
dir) :
aclocal
autoconf
automake
../configure
make

at this stage two errors will happen while compiling (you can ignore the
warnings about things been packed). With the errors, go to the listed
source file and remove the word the compiler doesn't like (along with
the :: that follows the word). Once done

make
su
make install
exit
ivan

.... and have fun Smile
