Well, Gygax was a Christian. I understand his first wife was a Jehovah's
Witness, but that he was a mainstream Protestant type for most of his life.
I can easily believe that he didn't know they'd knock gamers' donations
back. Of course, this is one of the many reasons why I don't support
religious charities of any kind.

The Christian roots of D&D haven't really been talked about all that
much, because they are less overt than the Tolkien or pulp fiction
roots, but they are one of the most important things differentiating it
from other RPGs of its time.

One wonders how they would take his money but not GenCon's. I mean, did
they not know who he was?
But I suppose they already have their reward. |

There are also knock-on effects that have to do with Gygax's desire to
avoid using Christian entities - the whole reason we have solars,
planetars, devas, and so on is that Gygax didn't want to use cherubim,
seraphim, and other Christian kinds of angels in his game.

But he was perfectly cool with using all the devils and demons? Because
those were present throughout Gary's tenure, and were only removed when
OTHER people took over.
That seems rather odd to me.
