What's the deal with the Los Santos gangs in the video game "Grand
Theft Auto: San Andreas"? Since the character OG-Loke is a member of
the Grove Street Families, one would think that they are the
equivalent of the real life Cribs. "Loke", I believe, is a Crib slang
term for other Cribs.

(Think, for example, of the seminal hit "Nothing But a 'G' Thing" by
Doctor Dre and Snoop Doggie Dog, where the pair is referred to as "two
loked-out negroes going crazy". It is known that Snoop Doggie Dog is
affiliated with the Long Beach Cribs, as you can hear from his many
"shout-outs" to "the LBC".)

(On the other hand, Death Row, the label that used to pay them, is
rumored to be bankrolled by Bloods. Why would a Blood record label
have Crib affiliated hip hop artists? Can anyone shed some light on
this?)

But I digress. In the game the Grove Street Families are a small,
beleaguered gang surrounded by the bigger Ballers, which doesn't fit
the Cribs. On the other hand, if they're supposed to be the Bloods,
why is one of them going around calling himself a Crib?

Further, the Grove Street color is green whereas the Ballers - the
biggest gang at the beginning of the game, set in 1992 - dress in
purple. Purple is closer to red, which is the Bloods' color, whereas
green is a color for boys, like the Cribs' blue. Also, the names
"Ballers" and "Bloods" both begin with the letter "b".

Finally, the Grove Street Families are a loose, disunited coalition of
gangs. The Ballers certainly seem to be more united at the beginning
of the game. Does this suggest that Grove Street is Bloods, a
coalition of gangs united by their hatred for the Cribs?

For a white person like myself this is all most confusing. Please
help, LA gang experts. Which "Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas" Los
Santos gang corresponds to which real life Los Angeles gang?

I think you're thinking *way* too hard about it, I don't think Rockstar
went for much real-life continuity in the game. Obviously it has it's
parallels to LA, but there's not much set in stone that they don't
switch around to suit the game's storyline.

Incidentally, it's Crip, not Crib. Try reading Monster, the biography
of Sanyika Shakur, if you're interested .. it gives a really good
background to the LA gang scene.

Loc (not Loke) isn't (as far as I can tell) particularly crip-specific.
It can be used as short for Loco (crazy, unhinged... i.e. what snoop
used it for) or short for Local and used like Homeboy. Search google
groups for Patrick Atoon's Rap Dictionary on rec.music.hip-hop , it's
probably in there somewhere!

That would be bad-ass. You could put various D-list celebrities in the
different gangs, and each week one could be 'voted out' with a drive-by
Smile.

What has 'crip' got to do with being young? There are loads of origins
cited all over the place, but I've never heard this one. Most are based
around ancronyms (Crazy Ruthless/Real Insane Person for example). Like
I said, I'd suggest reading up (Monster, Do or Die etc etc) if you're
geniunely interested.

I'd take a stab at this being a very random attempt to troll, though,
what with alt.flame being included in the recipients?

Indeed, although has it really created much argument? It wasn't really
provocative enough...

its "CRIPS" not CRIBS

Originally it was for:

Community Resources for an Indpendent People.

It was an activist group like the Black Panthers.

Why cross-post to this group, a hip-hop group, a basketball group and the

No, I believe it's a show about people's homes, also known as "cribs".
Also, _First Blood_ was not about Sylvester Stallone's character's
quest to find the founder of the Bloods.

The gang's name, by the way, comes from the fact that in the early
days its members were really young, not from the alternative meaning
"to steal" as many erroneously believe.

Are you sure? I'm sure that's what that film was about...

The gang's name, by the way, is *CRIPS*.
