I am running a home built rig that I put together last March. It
prolly has less than 200 hours on it.

I haven't installed anything new on it in months, and haven't used in a
couple of months. The other day I ran MOH Allied Assaunt for half an
hour, and then FS 2004 for half an hour. Then today I started FS X and
the machine got wonkey and froze before I even got off the ground.
Rebooted, and then after freezing again I got the blue screen of death.
I could boot into WinXP for a number of times, trying to troubleshoot
it, and now I get the BSOD Just after I get to the desktop.

I have never had this problem ever before (yeah, I know, lucky me...)
While the machine would still boot I ran Norton Utilities Win Doctor
and checked the HD with Disk Doctor.

The machine is not connected to the internet, and I don't have a lot of
junk on this machine. I am running photoshop and some other flight
sims. I am running the original install of Win XP with SP2, with no
other upgrades. No anti-virus or spybot stuff.

The machine goes to the BSOD while booting now, so it is getting worse.

I have no idea how to begin troubleshooting this! Is it liable to be
hardware issues like Hard Drive, RAM, Video Card, Sound Card, DVD
burner, or is it liable to be the system itself?

The machine specs are:

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600
MSI P35NEO2-FR775RT mobo
XFX 8800gts 512 M
2 x 2GB Crucial Memory
SONY NEC AD-7191S SATA DVD burner
Creative Soundcard
PC Pwr & Cooling S610EPS
500 GB SATA2 WD5000AAJS
Antec 900 Case

I would be very thankful for any suggestions on how to begin troubleshooting.

Thanks,

Ken

Get memetest86 and test the ram, if you are using Vista then press F8
when booting (if you can get that far)and there is a ram tester there.
The other possible culprit is bad PSU. Swap out the PSU for a known good
one and see how it is then. Text the ram first though.

Hi Jonathan:

Thanks for the help. One problem I am having is that the fiile I
downloaded has a "Boot" folder which I burned to a CD. In that folder
there is a file "BOOT.CAT" and "MEMTEST.IMG"

Will that memtest image file run? I was expecting an exe file.

thanks,

Ken
