Tabula Rasa the same sort of thing and is due for launch. Sounds
better the Hellgate. Seems to be getting better press too. Needs a sub
though, which is why I'm going to pass on it. While there's a free
part of Hellgate, from what I've heard you need to sub if you want to
play it seriously. |

I've heard worrying humours about both of them, ie being put back and
back cause they aren't that good. Some people thing Conan might be a
dud. Warhammer had 1m+ people signed up for the beta alone!
Have you tried Guild Wars? I really like it. Much more combat
originated then WoW. |

GW doesn't have the item, armour and level grind WoW (and I assume
DaoC!) has. It has this concept called max armour & weapon. Basically
the maximum damage/armour value a piece of equipment can have. The way
it works the item from the hardest dungeon no better then one you get
right after you leave the newbie area. It just looks nicer.
Levelling totally fixed too, to power level you to max level within a
few hours of play.
The idea is to level the playing field, so it comes down to the player
skill and not their equipment.
You can work through the game at you own pace, since it pretty much
100% soloable. Only really to group for the harder quests or when you
require to do two things at once.
The only real problem you might have is finding groups in the old
areas, since like WoW the player base has moved on.
If you get it, get Nightfall or the box set with the original game and
the Eye of the North expansion. Don't get Eye of the North by itself,
since you need one of the first three games to use it.

Probably Warhammer, since it has the fan base. |

I've had it since release (and got every expansion) but never played
it much until a few months ago. Again due to WoW. But I've run out of
things to do in WoW, bah raiding.
Unfortunately I've almost done GW now too. It's got nothing like the
content of a true mmorpg. |

yep
installed it last night - it's only a demo of the single player mode
though. graphics aren't exactly fantastic, but seems ok enough. I'll
probably risk buying it and playing it in the limited multiplayer mode
before i even consider shelling out a subscription fee.

I downloaded a 14 day trial for Eve last night, but I not that jazzed
about joining an established MMO, I'd prefer to start at the start with
everyone else...

Blimey, despite it being the PC Gamer cover game this month it only got 73%.
I still might give it a go if I had a PC up to it, mind.

According to wikipedia
"The UK subscription will cost £6.99 and EU subscription is ¤9.99.[11]
There are two types of multiplayer accounts: free and subscription
accounts. Subscribers will have access to ongoing content updates,
expected to be released every two or three months.[citation needed] The
initial content updates will include more monsters, more weapons,
additional item sets and special quests for ultimate items.
Additionally, subscribers will be allowed 24 character slots instead of
3, access to a Hardcore mode, special PvP arenas and a PvP ladder, the
ability to bypass server queues, a shared storage space with room for 40
items instead of 20, the ability to create guilds, the ability to
achieve officer status in guilds, and 24-hour customer support.
Subscribers and non-subscribers will be able to interact in all ways in
the game. Non-subscribers can join guilds, but not create them.[12]
The level cap is set to 50 for both subscribers and non-subscribers."

I'll check it out. What happened with Conan and Warhammer, are they
still on the cards and looking good? I really want something to replace
WoW, but it's a bit difficult to predict the likely successor, and the
official websites are always a bit light on what the game will actually
be like to play... |

Dunno about Conan but Warhammer is still on the cards.
I'll be hopefully joining the closed beta testing when they get to the
testing of guild mechanisms though that won't be until December at the
earliest as the beta has been closed down for a few months while they do
some major work on it.
At the moment it's firmly under the usual NDA gubbins too so friends who
have already been beta testing it have told me bugger all
offical sites are

I almost bought it, but I really want a new game where everyone is on
the same playing field, so I'm waiting for the next round to arrive.
Only one of the latest MMOs will actually properly survive in my
opinion, it's just a matter of which one it is... |
