I was just leaving my office for a very late lunch and couldn't help
noticing a Robinson R44 helicopter sitting within the grounds of the
Estate. I was just going to drive on past the open space where he was
sitting and I thought 'Bloody hell Chris stop the car and go over'. I
was all excited like a little groupie meeting her idol
The pilot had dropped off a Client for a meeting but as flying VFR and
coming from Dublin he had mistaken our business complex (within a
castle complex) for a 5 Star hotel a couple of miles away. His Client
had already been collected and was away so he said 'jump in' and gave
me a brief guided tour of the systems. His heli was only equiped with
GPS with no radio navigation like VOR or DME. When he asked where the
hotel was I described it and pointed in its general direction and said
to follow the river.
After I thanked him and headed on my very merry way I was kicking
myself that I didn't say
"take me up and I'll show you were it was" (I think he may have
obliged as he seemed the character). I know very little about
rotaries and only fly the Bell Jet Ranger now and again in FSX and
never tried the R44's smaller R22 which is in the sim. I have also
never sat in a cockpit IRL (apart from a Harrier at an airshow) so was
excited and scared at the same time especially when he took a phone
call and stepped away leaving the keys ))))))
Well that's my excitment for one day. Minor I'm sure to what a lot of
you guys get up to in your daily routines but made me happy none the
less. My interest had dwindled slightly in FS as I haven't had in on
much (goes in cycles) but I will sure be flying again this evening!
All the best

You won't make that mistake again...
The rule is, always grab free airtime even if you have to take a cab or
airliner to get back home.

I certainly won't. I was thinking afterwards 'stuff work' I'd even
walk the couple of miles back to the office. My boss knows I love
aviation and FS. An architect we associate with on some projects has
a pilot licence, I think he flys transporters of some sort at times -
I must get a word with him someday perhaps get a junt somewhere and
back again )

I always thought they would be cheaper but a quick Google on UK
lessons they are indeed more expensive. You would think with more
freedom, no parking fees if private ownership on private land and no
landing fees etc there would be less overheads. You could hire boB!

The guy had some experience with FS and knew the R22 was in it. I
never liked 22 and called it a 'bubble helicopter' to him. I was
terrified just sitting there on the ground with the engines off!
As for pedals I recently hooked up my Logitech steering wheel pedals
into FS and agree it takes a bit of getting used to

I had planned to use some of my remaining savings on booking a trial
flight in Northern Ireland during the summer. There are various
packages ranging from 30, 45 to 60 mins but as the 60min package takes
a tour of the Mourne Mountains in County Down I would have to take
that on as I used to climb them a lot. But with a price tag of £160
for a C172 it's getting a little high especially with the cost of
living here shooting a way up. 1 litre of diesel for my car has just
reached 125.9p (£5.72 per gallon) ($11.27). I'll be walking soon like
the rest of the population

At least you had the guts to go asking the first question )
I'm waiting for summer to arrive here in Copenhagen, because there are plans
on starting a new tourist thing, chopper flights around town, and boy do I
want to be on one )
The pricing looks a bit steep though, but hey, what other ways do I have to

Why are helicopter flights always more expensive than regular flights?
And why do helicopter flights have 7 minute price tages?
Two years ago I wanted to charter a helicopter so I could take some aerial
photos of the BC town I grew up in. It would have cost me $350 for every
7 minutes. I couldn't find anyone with a regular GA plane for charter, so I
ended up settling with a postcard with a really bad aerial photo on it.

I have never been up in a chopper. But was able to sit in one about 12
months ago.
I think (not sure) its the Robinson R44 the same one that you sat in. There
are a couple based here and used variously for cattle mustering as well as
power line inspection (part of the state wide grid).
I often see then arriving & departing at usually very low level < 500 feet
agl.
Something always intrigues me - IRL and in the sim we fly fixed wing
aircraft from the left hand seat - yet in every helicopter I've seen at our
airport the pilot always flies from the right-hand seat.
Somehow this seems a bit back-to-front??? Why is it so???

Yep, always the RH seat.
I was privileged to charter helicopters (Usually a JetRanger) regularly for
years. (So did my wife who was in the same profession, but working with a
different group). I just love helicopters. It is so exhilarating!!
But I had many "close calls". Here is one. See
http://s283.photobucket.com/albums/kk297/Oldbloke49/?action=view&curre...Crisis.
In this instance I was on the ground waiting to get into the helicopter.
The pilot almost touched down, hesitated and then moved sideways for a
better spot. But the pilot didn't see an anthill, which caught the skid.
The pilot was unconscious. We knew enough to switch things down, We got the
pilot out who was still unconscious. It was very remote and our only
contact with the outside world was via the aircraft's radio. We were aware
that this pilot did not bother with a SAR watch! Eventually we managed to
get the helicopter's radio going and we made contact with a fixed wing about
100 km away. That guy raised the alarm for us.
The pilot had concussion, but recovered all OK.

Thanks Carl but I honestly couldn't afford it at the moment. My wife
and I of 18 years separated last year so finances are a little tight
now. Can hardly afford to drive the car at the rates diesel is going
up in price 125.9p per litre here. I would prefer to learn a fixed
wing and have often checked out the Ulster Flying Club in
Newtownards. Been tempted to try one of their introduction packages
especially the 1 hour flight which takes you over the Mournes but it's
£160, at least it counts towards your PPL

I think Marcel that the maintenance is very expensive. They are complex
gadgets and have a lot more service costs that fixed wing. An R44 uses
around 45 litres of fuel an hour I guess so thats probably a $100 plus
pilot fees (they charge more than fixed wing as well). Then there is an
allowance for rotor replacements (ouch!!) and engine replacement. A new
engine would be about $35,000 and needs replacing every 2,000 hours or
less. I dare not think what a new set of blades would cost. The above
are $A figures.

Fuel is getting a bit pricy today, this Monday Diesel prices passed those of
gasoline here, who would ever have thought that / 95oct unleaded is
DKK11,20/litre Diesel is 11,44/litre, that's roughly US$2,39/l or $9/gal of
diesel, and I thought our gas prices were steep?. No wonder prices on every
thing is going through the roof at the moment (

What? You don't want that to happen...
As the US$ devalues, that means you get more fuel for your Euro than we get
for our Dollars.
