If you could choose any ~42" HDTV, which would you choose?

I dropped into Comet/PC World today and had a look around. 42" looks
like the right size for me (big enough to be impressive without being
willy-compensating!).

The plasmas all looked much nicer than the LCDs, but I worry about fan
noise.

The LGs all had a cheapo tupperware feel to them, the Samsungs felt
pretty good, and the Panasonics all had really nice build quality.

I couldn't side-by-side compare 1080p with any of the lower options
but it seems to make sense to go for higher res.. it makes a big
difference in the PC gaming arena and I don't see why it would be
different on a telly.

I'm also concerned about how my SD hardware will look, namely Jag, DC,
Wii, ST, DVD.

Would love to hear some recommendations!

I also have the 42X3030D and it has treated me well over the past
year. I got it because you said it was good!

Probably gonna replace it next year though (well demote it to a
different room). I cant even imagine the prices of large screens by
January 2010. Even the price difference between now and a year ago is
astronomical.

So yeah its another recommendation for the 42X3030D if you can find
somewhere it somewhere cheap.

Basically, people will recommend what they have. I have a couple of
Toshiba LCDs that I'm happy with and I never really put that much
research into their purchase - hell my latest one I bought primarily
because it had a very small bezel which was important to me due to it
being 46" and at the very upper limit of what I could fit in my sitting
room. It's not half bad all things considered - I suppose it depends on
how anal you're prepared to be about scan frequencies, dynamic contrast
ratios and whether it can handle 24fps for true movie playback, etc - to
me, it just feels like the usual law of diminishing returns.

Thing is, the market moves so rapidly that there seems to be a newer
better version of whatever model you're looking at six months later.

FWIW, I've had a Panasonic plasma for about a year, and I've never noticed
it making any noise. I can hear a bit of a buzzing if I stick my ear up to
the back (same as with a CRT), but that's about it. I prefer the look of a
plasma screen compared to LCD, and I'm really happy with my set. I've not
got any burn in or anything like that, but you can get a bit of image
retention with game HUDs if you play for a very long time (though it clears
quite quickly).

I have a year-and-a-bit-old Toshiba 42X3030D 1080p which will probably
set you back around £50 these days. I love it very much.

That's really helpful, thanks. Which model? Get image retention ever?

Does that have their "game mode" feature? These things make me
suspicious of the manufacturer's integrity, just like "rock" and
"jazz" settings do on hi fis.

No idea. If it does I don't use it. It's just a preset, what does it
matter? I don't care if hi-fis have rock and jazz EQ presets as long as
they allow manual configuration of the EQ as well.

Toshiba's latest equivalent is the 42XV555DB Regza. I've added it to
my list!

I think of TVs as ideally transparently displaying the video
information in the source without imparting their own style or effects
on to them. There should be just one mode: Correct!

But that assumes all eyes to be the same. Some people are overly
sensitive to high levels of brightness. Some, like me, like high
brightness. Similarly I like my audio with a lot of top and bottom end,
with a slight cut if anything to the mids, from flat. Some people just
like it completely flat. It's because of this that I mix my recordings
through my actual stereo, pre-EQed the way I like it, because if I use
flat monitoring systems like one is supposed to, I have a tendency to
over-EQ everything, whereas if I make it sound just right on my stereo,
it sounds flat through everything else when it gets bounced. Not a
normal technique, but it works for me.
