I need a new HDTV, but not a very good one ... or at least a very
adapatable one. Specifically, one that will still display good
pictures from my Series 2 Pioneer 810H.

All of the reviews I read ... and it's a lot of them ... talk about the
high quality of 1080p, and that seems to be the new standard. While I
am interested in good quality Hi Def (I recently bought an HD-XL), I
would also like to have one that does a reasonably good job with my
legacy equipment.

Any suggestions?

Any particular models you recommend?

None I could recommend as the one I bought is now two years old. I've seen
far too much variation between product years and models to stick with any
one model as a guarantee. For high-end sets like the Pioneer, maybe, but
for low and mid-range, not a chance. It's pretty much a 'go and see it in
person' exercise.

Based on the discussions here and my research on other NGs & CNET, I
ended up with a Samsung 48" LCD in the 650 line (LN46A650). $1399 from
Best Buy. Best buy was pretty aggressive -- matched Circuit City's
lowest price, matched their 36 month no interest, and had a Samsung
Blu-Ray in the package for $150.

OTA SD signals on the TV look really good. HD OTA is incredible.

I've cranked up the recording quality on both the HD-XL and Pioneer
810H to the highest settings in hopes of improving playback quality,
and switched the cables on the 810 from composite video to component.

Nice, innit? It sounds like you've got a rig to last for a decade now...

The Samsung is great. Well, mostly. The EPG on settop converter boxes
is better than on the TV. TiVo's guide, of course, is the best of all.

Then the 810H crashed yesterday. Constant "Powering Up" gray screen.
New disk on order from Weaknees.
