Mostly looking to see if they have a "this company is in administration"
sign in the window (yet)

Kid comes in with family, starts looking at the LotR stuff.
Store manager starts in with the usual "what are you looking for today?".
And then proceeds to move the talk away from LotR and onto FB as fast as he
can.

Quick sample:
"how old are you?"
"er.... 8"
"8? Then you're probably old enough to try our other tabletop games, have
you seen..."

I probably should have called a cop, that's like selling the poor kid crack
when he came in for chewing gum.

I'm guessing their licence is nearly up?

I'm guessing that you are in the UK then ? (I was going to put a
smiley but it seemed inappropriate (even by the standards of RGMW !))

I'm actually in South Manchester and our local Arndale shopping
precinct currently seems to be having something closing on a frequent
basis ( we even lost our McDonalds recently) that's why I thought you
were in the UK as it sounded so familiar.

That's the hype, but I don't think they're related phenomena.
GW insists that their LotR licensing experiment was successful.
But, whenever people ask who even bothers buying LotR, they say:

"Lots of people who don't live near you. Any of you. Lots and lots."

Whatever the reason for GW's decline, it's nothing to do with LotR.
Remember, any benefit from NLE movie promos ended way back in 2003.
And GW's own remuneration chart shows the Bad Thing happening mid-2004
-

http://img604.imageshack.us/content.php?page=blogpost&files=img116/778...w5yrwq1

Whatever it was, it started a tailspin from which they've not
recovered.
I'd advance some theories, but my foil hat's at the cleaners . . .

Yeah, I'm in the UK, Liverpool.
The GW is round the corner from Zavviand Woolworths, and almost opposite
Clinton Cards,
Half the shops in town have a sign up with their Christmas opening hours,
the other half have the date the store will close down.

They taped off half our main shopping centre the other day due to a
"suspicious package". We were (half-)joking that maybe they were roping off
the shops that have gone bust that morning...

If I recall correctly (and I'm sure you lot will let me know if I don't),
GW have been doing very badly recently - they were propped up by LotR,
which is fading fast.

I looked at this months WD and its lacking the LotR section, about frickin
time!!! Lets charge too much for our in shop catalog I mean magazine and
make a third of it useless to our customer base by dedicating that third to
a game that the base doesn't usually buy.

?
I've got UK WD 349 and they're in that.
Unfortunately.

Like I say, though, they made a lot of money off that licence and now
that's going away, we might all lose out.

wasn't that about the time that Andy Chambers quit?

unlikely to be directly related, I know, but one has to wonder ...

Well, I know of 3 really amazing mistakes they made, all related to the
computer games side:

1. When Blizzard approached them and said "we're making a fantasy MMORPG,
interested in licensing and funding?" GW said "No." WoW what a mistake.
2. The first attempt GW did have at an MMORPG was a disaster based on their
outlay and the deal they'd struck. They licenced all of their fantasy
products, and agreed to fund both development and ongoing costs. I.E. they
were going to pay for the game to be made, and then for the game to run
(servers, tech support etc) for a CUT of the money. They brought in a new
head of computer games development, whose jaw hit the floor and dropped the
development, writing off the money they'd already invested but saving them
from another massive outlay.
3. They didn't hire me as the head of computer games development (I
completely screwed up the interview.)

Anyone seen the footage of the new Space Marine game?
Over the shoulder job, heavily based on close combat, to the extent that
you (as the marine) have the old bolt pistol / chainsword combo as your
weapon set (and that's it - no switching).
The footage available shows the main character repeatedly running towards
traitor guardsmen, firing the bolt pistol AS A DISTRACTION while he gets
into close combat with them.
I don't mean "duck! he's firing a bolt pistol at us!" I mean the shots hit
them repeatedly, and makes them shake, stopping them from firing back while
he runs 200 metres to hit them with his chainsword.
See point 3 above.

There were numerous items of note on or about that time frame:

1. GW blitzed the US discount market by banning internet sales by US
companies.
2. GW blitzed the Internet populace at large by vigorously prosecuting
"Intellectual Property" violations i.e. if anyone displayed anything on
their web site related to 40K or Fantasy they were sent cease and desist
letters and told to shut it down.
3. GW blitzed their staff starting with their most talented people. Andy
Chambers comes to mind.
