Graphics card problem

Go to http://www.ati.com and check for updated drivers for your radeon card.
Seems weird that all of a sudden it doesn't work with the game.

You *do* understand what he was saying when he told you that the video
card you're using is not supported, corrected?

Well, maybe *I* misunderstand what the term 'supported' means. What I've
always understood it to mean is this: The piece of software/hardware you
are using may work with our piece of software/hardware, but we can't
help you if it suddenly stops working. We don't have the specs, we don't
have the manuals, we don't have the right to start messing around with
the internal problems that your piece of software/hardware is having.

Am I wrong on that?

Why do you think this is a graphics card problem
out of interest? It looks like either a network problem, or a
file permissions problem; the file either can't be downloaded
from Sony, or can't be written to your hard drive.

In either case, that wouldn't have anything to do with your
graphics card. If you're not logged in as administrator, try
running the patcher as administrator and see if that fixes it; also
try using ctrl+alt+del and the running processes tab to kill any
processes (you can't break your computer here, don't worry) that
you can, and try running the patcher again. PRobably dont want
to kill explorer though

Well, unless you've subsequently gotten past the p[atching problem and
are now having a display error you're not telling us about, I'd
think its someone fobbing you off - you're not on our supportedc
list, wheee, call resolved, +1 SLA.

Not specifically, but in general YES you are wrong.

If I buy a car and put an aftermarket "unsupported" car stereo in and
everything works fine for 5 months and then suddenly the brakes stop
working. I expect the manufacturer to fix the brakes, not tell me I have
an unsupported stereo, and that they can't help me with the brakes as a
result.

There is no reason to beleive that the VIDEO CARD he is using is
preventing the PATCHER from DOWNLOADING a file. And any "tech support"
agent who thinks otherwise needs to be demoted back to "paper weight"
post-haste.

To the OP, if you feel like calling tech support again, pick a card on
the list, find out what the latest drivers are and when you call
support; if they ask: LIE. Those monkey's are reading a script, and if
they can't figure it out for themselves, "help" them get past that
script step by giving them the answer they need to proceed.

Faned's response seems a much more sensible one, by the way so look into
that. Also disable anti-spyware or anti-virus software and anything else
that might be 'monitoring' the eq files or folders (log
parsers/macros/etc). Also if its giving you a file name that its having
trouble with, try manually removing that file (e.g. drag it to your
desktop) to get the local copy "out of the way".

Also just to drive the point home: you could uninstall the drivers and
tell windows its a generic "Super VGA" card with no hardware
acceleration at all. EQ won't run at all, no how, but the patcher will
still work just fine!

Well, I wasn't addressing the OP's problem. I have no idea what his
problem is but he seemed pretty sure it was a video card problem and
if he presented it to a tech support person as a video card problem,
then the 'We don't support that card' seems like a reasonable response.

I don't see where he said the TS guy said it was a video card problem.

This, for example, could be remedied by reading his post:

If you went to your mechanic and said "My brakes don't work, i put in an
aftermarket stereo, I think its the problem" and the mechanic said "We
don't support aftermakret stereos, goodbye."

Would you think that was a reasonable response? Would that be a mechanic
you went back to?

The tech should have performed his own diagnosis of the PROBLEM based on
the symptoms and/or error messages not what the OP said he thought the
problem was. I can tell you from experience that sometimes the customer
does have a good handle on what the problem is, but far more often than
not, the customers theory on why his system isn't working is utterly and
completely misguided.

Of course at SOE they are rewarded for fast turnaround not effective
support. If he can close another ticket by writing down "unsupported gfx
card" instead of actually troubleshooting the problem, he makes his boss
glow with pride and happiness.

Sure, you *could* theorize that the first, and only thing he said was
"EQ doesn't work, I have Radeon blah blah blah that worked for 5
months..." but we have no reason to beleive that is the case.

OP I get an error runing the patcher. "Error downloading pather
files" ...
TS Ok... lets see what we can do. OK...What video card do you have?
OP radeon blah blah.
TS that's not on our supported list
OP its new and its worked for 5 months
TS we don't support it and can't help you. try the latest drivers.

error, and i called tech support and they said my video card wasn't
supported...
