Just discovered this: www.games2download.com/
free-strategy-games/american-civil-war-gettysburg.htm, I do not
remember a quote in this newsgroup.

"strategic turn-based combat" -- "they fight their way into the heart
of the northern aggressor or hold fast against the rebel invaders" --
all download: a free 232 MB version or a full one for US$19.95.
(Sys-rec: Win 98/ME/2000/XP, Pentium III 800, Mem: 128 MB, 400 MB
free HD space --- **Only 400MB for 3D + DX9 ?!**)

www.computeruniverse.net quotes it with DirectX=9.0. A GlobalStar
game, but I did not find it on www.globalstarsoftware.com.

FYI: direct link to the game mentioned:

http://www.games2download.com/free-strategy-games/american-civil-war-g...ysburg.

Just one of several reviews about the game:

http://www.game-over.net/reviews.php?id=1005

I remember trying the demo several months ago. Initially I thought
that this game had a lot of potential. It reminded me of Combat
Mission in the 3d mode but the gameplay proved to be very quirky. The
review mentions a couple of the major issues with the game engine.
I'll keep an eye out for a patch that perhaps fixes the game play - the
graphics do look very nice.

I like this bit of the review:

"Of course, 3D strategy titles are a dime a dozen these days. At its
core, though, ACWG is still a wargame. That’s evident by the fact that
every map is divided into _hexagonal_ _squares_ and you cannot stray
from the grid."

Ah, those hexagonal squares are the mark of a true war game! Smile
