After reading Spalls's post asking what people had been playing in
August I was reminded of how quickly this year is passing by. That in
turn set me thinking about the best games of this year so far.
I tried to think of my top 5 games of 2006, games that would be worthy
candidates for GOTY for 06. After giving it some thought, I came to
the conclusion that, in my opinion, 2006 has been a below average
year for PC action games.
My top 5 games for 2006 would be, in order of rank:
1.) Half-Life 2 Ep1.
Very short but also very sweet. No need to say any more
2.) Condemned: Criminal Origins.
I've just started playing it through for a second time. What a super
game it is. Very gritty and very nervy. I wish there were more games
for the PC in the survival/horror genre.
3.) Prey.
A cracking shooter with some neat and arguably innovative gameplay
elements. Nice use of the Doom III engine too.
4.) The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.
Not sure if this is really an action game or an RPG. Bit of a hybrid I
guess. Very nice game that suffers a little from something that I
can't quite put into words. As you get further into the game it seems
to get a little fragmented and I lose track of any story line. Still a
great game though and I applaud Bethesda for their efforts.
5.) Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth.
I really liked this game, but some parts were just too difficult and
became an exercise in tedium to complete. Very refreshing change of
focus though and definitely a very good game.
So, what's to look forward to?
Dark Messiah of Might and Magic. I am very much looking forward to
this game. I hope it means that 2006 will end on a high note for PC
gaming.
TimeShift. I wasn't hugely impressed by the demo. It ran quite poorly
on my system and had the vague feel of console about it. I think this
one might be a lemon.
Hellgate: London. Very interesting looking FPS/RPG hybrid.
Biggest miss of the year: Rogue Trooper. What a steaming pile that
turned out to be.
Biggest disappointment of the year. S.T.A.L.K.E.R being delayed yet
again. Shades of DNF with this one. I really hope it doesn't go the
way of the Dodo, like so many other games have.
That's about it really. A pretty dismal and disappointing year in my
opinion.

I was going to try the demo of this, despite not finding 3rd person
view too endearing. I was completely put off by the screen shots. I
have never considered myself a "graphics junkie" but some games just
turn me off because of the way they look.
I guess that opinions of games can't help but be influenced by a
persons particular likes and dislikes. It's a subjective matter, but
one that I still find interesting to discuss.

Uh, which one? Just Cause or Hitman? They're both 3rd person.
I liked them both, but Just Cause seems more the one I may spend hours upon
hours with. But, I just have the demo.

Never mind...been drinking too much, you meant Just Cause.
I love this demo, more fun than I've had in ages on a game. And before the
demo, I never heard of the damn thing! It's basically GTA in a 3rd world
country with a lot of parachuting and crazy stunts, and a lot more chaotic.
Try it.

Indeed. That's why I thought the "arguably" comment was pertinent.
I liked the portals, the spirit walk and the gravity walks. I'd not
come across any of those in any other game as far as I could remember.
I thought the graphics were very good, but I will admit that I grow a
little weary of the Doom III engine, despite there only being 4 games
that use it (I think).

F.E.A.R was a 2005 game. It wouldn't have been in my top 5 even if it
was. Too repetitive and soulless for my liking.
I can't think of any other above average games for the PC this year. I
must admit that I rarely play anything other than FPS and some RPG's
so my tastes are rather limited in that respect.

I must be getting old. I yearn for the times when I used to count down
the days to a big release. I remember not being able to sleep the
night before RTCW was released. I also remember being outside my
nearest Electronics Boutique well before opening time to get my
pre-ordered copy of Jedi Knight II.
Back in those days I only had dial-up and didn't always get to hear
about upcoming games. I used to look at Gone Gold almost every day but
that was about it. Going into a GAME store once a fortnight and
sometimes stumbling across a newly released FPS or Action game used to
be fantastic. I always used to excitedly check the screen shots on the
back of the box to see if they were in first person perspective.
I really miss the buzz of looking forward to a "blockbuster" release.
The last games that I remember being genuinely excited about were
Unreal 2, HL2 and DE:IW.
There just doesn't seem to be that kind of potential heavyweight on
the horizon these days. In fact, the ratio of garbage to quality has
gone way up in my opinion.

I'm with ya there. I feel the same way. Maybe getting older, who knows? But
I still enjoy a good quality game. It seems they are few and far between
despite the continued increase in video game revenue. Yes consoles may have
a lot to do with that, but even there, I don't have the urge to buy an Xbox
360 like I did for an Xbox or PS2.
Everything is too formulaic these days, and titles that take genres to new
heights like Half-Life 2 or Oblivion are just too infrequent. There are
rarely any decent expansions either. I hate it when there is a great game,
and it is just abandoned to go to the next project. That is what I like
about Half-Life 2. While I wish the episodes were released a little more
frequently, or made to last a little longer, at least they are making a
great game better, and adding more content. I would even be happy to have a
Half-Life 2.5 full length game using the same game engine.
The problem is partly because games are so popular, developers and
publishers are only willing to go with what makes the most money. Not many
companies are willing to take any chances any more.
Well, at least Crysis seems to be one game to look forward to! |

If the year were to end right now, Oblivion is a shoo-in for GOTY for the
PC platform anyway.

I know what you mean. I'm looking forward to:
Crysis
Armed Assault (by the guys who did Operation Flashpoint)
Silent Hunter IV
I know Rockstar are developing this "Bully", but I don't think it looks like
my cup of tea. I would be excited about the next GTA, though. |

But why? What is so good about Oblivion? Everyone praises the
open-endedness, but to me it just makes the game more boring because
there's no way to ensure a tight gameplay structure. Heck, Fallout 2 was
open-ended, but at least that was set in a more interesting environment
and with a much more interesting style.
Perhaps I'm just pissed because everyone's infatuated with this generic
POS, I'm not, but I fear I'm missing out on something (or I'm broken.) |

I sort of feel that way myself, except I can't quite put my finger on
just what I feel could be criticised about the game. Not linear
enough? Too open ended? Both sound extreme and rather churlish, but
it is something along those lines for me.
I lose the sense of story and thus the sense of journey and purpose.
It happened a little for me with Morrowind too. Boiling Point as well
now that I come to think of it.

Sorry, Just Cause is the game I was talking about.
I played the original Hitman and really didn't like the "over the
shoulder" perspective at all. I haven't tried any of the Hitman games
since.

I really miss the sense of anticipation leading up to a big game,
usually a sequel to a successful original, which is most surely a
indication that games were batter "back in the day" in my opinion.
It's not just the game, but the whole build up. From the early screen
shots and media articles, to the opening of the official web site and
then on to teaser movies and a demo. It's all part of the experience
for me. I really haven't had that kind of buzz in the last two years
or so. Half -Life 2 was the last game that I really got that feeling
for.

Maybe.
I wonder how MOM&M will stand up to it in comparison? Although they
probably are different types of game, comparisons between the two are
inevitable in my opinion. |
