That's what I expected, but I never tried it. It might be worse if
you could kill him, probably the game would crash or at best the
mission would never end. Very Happy

This sort of reminds me of the PC game Operation Flashpoint. It's a
FPS squad combat simulator, with a very large playing area.

During one mission you're supposed to wait for an officer to arrive
and give you further orders. I waited and waited, he never showed
up. I knew the direction he should be coming from so I started
walking up the road, and found his jeep had crashed, him and the
driver were dead. That's realism!

That sounds scripted. If that was random and not supposed to happen, I'd be impressed. Were you still
able to do the mission somehow?

Of course it's really scripted. Otherwise you could kill him once everyone
outside has been killed, since he's waiting behind a door that's easily
accessed by ladder. You can get a foot away from him but can't touch him,
since the door is rocket and grenade-proof. That said, I really don't like
these type of missions where most of the freedom has been taken away due
to the scripting.
