We've just set up a new computer, and thanks to some difficulties in
transferring data from the old machine, I've downloaded a fresh copy of
3.4.3
But I've forgotten how to get the game to open in full screen mode. What
do I tweak and where?
Thanks in advance, folks. |

Downgrade from Vista to some earlier edition of Windows.
Vista doesn't allow command-prompt/MSDOS-box windows to be expanded
to full screen. Since that's the type of window that nethack's text
interface uses, "You can't get there from here."
Normally you would select full screen by creating a desktop
shortcut and customizing its properties. You can still make the
window bigger by forcing it to use a larger font, or you could even
force the whole desktop to be displayed with lower resolution while
nethack is running. Either of those could help but neither of them
is likely to be completely satisfying. (The 10x18 font produces
tolerable results at whatever moderately high resolution my monitor
is set at; nethack's window ends up being a bit less that quarter
screen sized though.)
The version that supports tiles (nethackW.exe) can display the
map with text (via one of the menu entries beneath the title bar)
instead of tiles, and it can be expanded to full screen. But it
will be quite a bit different from what you're used to using despite
the fact that game play is the same. |

Techincally, this is only true when a Vista-compatible video driver is
in use. Install the XP-compatible driver (and accept XP-level driver
stability as a result) and the full screen DOSbox comes back. |
