Hey guys,
I've now got a few hours under my belt in Black Shark and wonder how
many other people out there are also flying it. Unfortunately I
bought the Russian version a few days before the english release and
so am stuck without any training tracks/missions that I can understand
but at least I've got an english manual.
I'm slowly coming to grips with the basic systems, although trimming
the beast still gives me a headache at times. I've actually resorted
to programming my CH gear to trim independantly of the sim until I can
really sort out their system to my satisfaction. I'm gradually getting
better at flying this beast, even managing to put it down in one
piece after engine/rotor icing made me lose power.
The ability to display the Shkval and Abris on another monitor is nice
but the system isn't perfect for dual screens. It requires the screen
to be stretched across the 2 monitors, creating a single wide screen. I
believe that this can only be done under XP, and it results in the
interface screens being split over the monitors which is ugly - I
suspect that a triple head system would be better but that costs.
I'm just experimenting with the weapons systems and have at least
managed to destroy a few trucks in a couple of missions. Using Vhkrs
requires quite a bit of work - no LOAL mode here like in the longbow.
Still, it'll be quite satisfying when I get them down pat.
The multiplayer side of Black Shark seems to work well enough with the
use of communication equipment in the helos to co-ordinate pilots.
It's a big complicated sim and I'm sure that I'll spend a lot of hours
in trying to improve myself and embarrass myself in front of others in
multiplayer.

You're doing better than me. I'm still learning how to just fly the thing
well so just keep playing the very first single mission over and over. I
haven't even figured out how to arm the weapons yet. Hit master arm but
there is something else I need to do because none will fire, not even the
gun. Looks like I will need to read the manual after all. I hate reading
..pdf manuals when you are trying to learn a game because I can't have it in
front of me while learning. I go the bright idea of putting the .pdf manual
on a second monitor but that is NFG because the game takes exclusive control
of the mouse. What works is a second PC on it's own monitor beside your
other one and then move the .pdf manuals to that computer. I don't have my
PCs set up that way right now so need to set it up again. I do have two PC's
side by side though so just need to give one another monitor and
mouse/keyboard, which I do have. Problem is room on my desk. I have to go
buy a new larger desk just for BS. |

It's over an inch thick!!! Now I have to go back and pick out the
pages I want in color and print those...

They will be selling a printed and bound manual, like the one that a third-
party did for LO-MAC.

I've only got the weapons to fire by going through the full
designation proceedure:
Master arm [lctrl w]
Uncage Shkval [o]
Move sensor [,.;/]
Adjust 'gate size' [[]]
Lock target
Orient helo to face target
Then if cannon press [c] and you should be able to fire
If you want to fire Vikhrs don't press [c], press [y] for outer pylons
Have laser standy switch in 'on' position (can't remember keystroke
ATM)
Get the target circle inside the other circle on the hud - you should
see 'c' on the HUD then you can release weapon [ralt space]
I'm sure that there's probably a faster way to get the canon firing
but I'm only starting as well.
This simHQ article is pretty helpful when starting out.

If you're on XP you could put the Shkval and Abris on the second
monitor! It does mess up the interface screens though.

KVM switches are quite handy as they allow a single mouse/kb/monitor
to be used with multiple boxes. Just make sure that your in a stable
hover (or pause) before switching (you could always use 2 monitors and
only switch when you want to change pages).

Thanks for the info. By the time I get my weapon ready to fire I expect the
target will be long gone. Why are Russian platforms so finicky about getting
a weapon to fire? The very first SU-2& sim I had the same issue because some
of the weapons would not fire at all if you were not within in the correct
parameters. One weapon you had to be in the correct angle of attack before
it would fire.
I already do have KVM but most games lock mouse focus so you can't switch
from one monitor to the other while gaming. If I attached second monitor
and keyboard/mouse to the other PC I won't need to change focus of the mouse
from one PC to the other. Need the mouse or keyboard to change the pages in
the .pdf manual. I might buy the HC manual if it is not too expensive but
would rather not. |

How long does your toner cartridge last you at that rate? I've been using
the same toner cartridge for over 2 years now because I don't print out 500
page manuals with it. I have a fresh toner in the closet but have never
needed to change it yet. The printer will probably break before I need to
change it too. |

Hmmm.. your just a bundle of knowledge between here and the race-sim
newsgroup. How's this - don't print ANYTHING on your laser printer and
it will last you a lifetime!
Now let me remember why I bought my printers.... oh yeah, it was to
PRINT what I wanted to print! I pesonally like to have a printed
reference and though I could wait until they release a bound manual I
would rather not.
Anything else you need to know? LOL

Furthermore: Laser toner cartridges release bad chemicals into the air and
you are contributing to the clear cutting forestry industry. I expect you
even printed out the 26 page section on DRM and read every word. Printers
should only be used when really necessary. |

You shouldn't make it so easy for me to make you look stupid.
http://technologyexpert.blogspot.com/2008/12/laser-printers-not-as-bad...-cigare
The cause is the fixing unit, which heats so that toner will "fix" to the
paper. "The high temperatures cause volatile substances such as paraffins
and silicon oils to evaporate, and these accumulate as ultra-fine
particles," said WKI.
Last year a report from the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) in
Australia said that the particles of toner released by laser printers might
be as bad for your health as cigarette smoke. A new study from Germany's
Fraunhofer Wilhelm Klauditz Institute (WKI) purportedly refutes that
conclusion.
But the EPA's site is not so clear, and actually lists a host of issues that
can be attributed to VOCs (emphasis mine):
Eye, nose, and throat irritation; headaches, loss of coordination, nausea;
damage to liver, kidney, and central nervous system. Some organics can cause
cancer in animals; some are suspected or known to cause cancer in humans.
Key signs or symptoms associated with exposure to VOCs include conjunctival
irritation, nose and throat discomfort, headache, allergic skin reaction,
dyspnea, declines in serum cholinesterase levels, nausea, emesis, epistaxis,
fatigue, dizziness. |

Uhhm, so you would say "send that to the printer thats located on my desk"?
Thats sounds pretty stupid. Most people refer to their private equipment in
their office as "thiers" as does most companies. |
