Ah, that's too bad. I wouldn't have minded having a system that did
both...I guess I'll just stick with WinUAE for now.

I downloaded the Black Thorne ROM for the SNES. I think it's maybe
better than the 32x. The graphics are a step below, but the gameplay
is identical. And I got stuck on the snow level on the 32x version.
Seems to be a programmimg bug. There's no way to get through the
level. I've been through it over and over; there's no way out. |

Yeah, that's where I'm stuck!
The SNES version jumps right to a rainy forest level for level 2. Not
sure if there is a snow level or not. There's some really wild
gunfights in the forest |

The 32X version has an additional level:
"The Sega 32X version includes a fifth area, the snowy mountains, which
is not found in the other versions of the game."
With 32X sales so low, it's possible that noone got around to writing a
FAQ that includes the extra 32X level. I looked all over, I couldn't
find a single FAQ or usenet post talking about making it through the
area.

I did a quick and dirty comparison page for Blackthorne last year. If
the 32X game does indeed have a fatal bug it would obviously be inferior
to the SNES game. However, Blackthorne 32X is the only 32X game I've
seen that displays over 256 colors simultaneously. In addition to that
everything is larger and more detailed than the SNES counterpart.
Gameplay is roughly the same in both versions barring any control pad
comparison they are equal in playability.

Scratch that comparison about everything being bigger in the 32X
version, most of the screens are the same size, and the extra horizontal
pixels were wasted on the menu being perpetually visible.

I got through the snow mountain level. I used the password that the
SNES version gave me at the end of level 1
Well, the snow level doesn't seem to have all that much that would
make it worth documenting, although that is where I got the second
shotgun.
The SNES version has some creaky-chain pulley sound effects in the
rain forest. Sounds great. I haven't noticed the 32x version to have
it. Also, I noticed one of the guys with the whips whipped one of the
slaves in the mines and then laughed. Haven't seen that happen in the
32x version. I've noticed a few other minor variations so far. |

Wait, there's no bug. I figured it out. You have to jump off the
levitator onto a hidden ledge. It's in the dead end room next to
where you grab the iron key. The lost vikings do not appear to serve
any purpose.
I'm up to the desert level. It's really getting hard. The guys
basically have machine guns now. Yikes.
One thing that hurts the game is not having any sort of bosses at the
end of the levels. The SNES ROM has a pretty nifty screen saver built
into it. I haven't noticed the 32x version to have it. |

That's about the the only thing about the 32X that kind of disappoints
me: The Sound. If you read the specs for the 32X's sound chip, it sounds
really impressive...but turns out being a slightly more powerful version
of the Genesis' sound chip(in fact, it even uses it).

Yeah, the Vikings are just sort of there, as they were done by Blizzard
as well. I always wished that their game wasn't so puzzle-based...it
looked pretty good.

There are a few Genesis, Sega CD and 32X titles that have some wild
effects like that...I can't think of any off the top of my head though.
One I do remember is from some version of King of Fighers, I think. If
you leave the game paused long enough the fighters just start running
back and forth across the screen. It's pretty amusing.
