I picked up a 32X with 9 games in beautiful shape. Most of them have
manuals.

Here are the games.
Kolibri, Shadow squadron, cosmic carnage, space harrier, virtua
fighter, tempo, black thorne, metalhead, zaxxon 2000

$4 a game seems like good prices although I've never heard of many of
these.

Also got 2 unknow Genesis carts, Dynamite Headdy (?) and Soldiers of
fortune.

Jealous, even though I own eight of those already. Kolibri is the game
that shooter fans love the 32x for, as it's arguably one of the finest
scrolling 2D shooters ever made (and it's not even space ships or
airplanes.) Tempo is a very good music-based platformer, and Virtua
Fighter needs no introduction or advocate. Of the rest, I have a
particular fondness for Shadow Squadron, although it's only because I
enjoy space shooters a lot more than they deserve.

If you get a chance, you should see if you can dig up a copy of Knuckles
Chaotix. The co-op platformer introduced a lot of the side-characters that
we meet later in the Shadow and Sonic Heroes games, and was in fact a
predecessor to the multiple-character gameplay found in Heroes. It's not
the best game, but there's been no other platformer like it.

-KKC, digging on Operation Darkness.

Finally, having some luck again. It's been a while. Got the first
Terminator game on Ebay and also Shinobi III.

I'll keep an eye out for that one. There were what 50 games made for
the 32x?

I need to figure out what else to buy from the guy. He has a Saturn
in the box for $50. Apparently, it can play Sega CD games as well.
Maybe should consider getting that off of him.
He also had some kind of weird controller with split plugs for use on
the Genesis and SNES. At least that's what he thought that it was.

No it can't. The Saturn is not backward compatible, but a lot of
misinformed sales clerks thought it was.

You were looking at a 3DO controller there. Rather than having multiple
controller ports on the console itself, the 3DO controllers each had a
male and female port on them, and you connected each pad in a daisy-chain
fashion to each other. I think the 3DO could theoretically support ten
players this way, although the most any game allowed was three.

Ahhh.. well, that's kind of a shame, but it's good for me to know. I
was not aware of any compatability between the two. It came as
something of a surprise.

Interesting. But it is a good thing I did not buy it.

I still remember hearing rumors that the Saturn would play 32X games.
That would have been pretty hip, as would playing SCD titles. The Saturn
could have used the help during its lonely, lonely launch.

You've gotten yourself into a heap of decent titles. Blackthorn
complete is very hard to find, if you don't like it I'll happily buy it
off of you. Apart from that, Tempo, Cosmic Carnage, Metal Head and
Zaxxon 2000 require some old school patience to truly appreciate.
Kolibri, Shadow Squadron, Space Harrier and Virtua Fighter should be
able to hold their own against any game in their genres.

Dynamite Headdy is a good one, try it out. Soldiers of Fortune is an
overhead shooter if I recall. I prefer Skeleton Krew, but that's mainly
because the graphics are such a feast.

Please don't base your decision on getting the Sega CD version off this
game. It's *nothing* like it. They redid the entire game for the SCD,
and it's a Dave Perry "joint", so it's really good. The Genesis version
is sort of a beta when you see the SCD version: It's unbelievably
short(I've beaten it in around 13 minutes), the AI is brutal and the
levels are a shadow of what they should be.

> and also Shinobi III.

One of the best games not only in the Shinobi series, but also on the
Genesis overall. If it's a bit tough at first, look up the Invincibility
code and play through it like that.

Agreed. The game, unfortunately, gets a lot of flack for the simple
reason that everyone thought it was going to be Sonic on the 32X, and it
was more than just that. I think that once one lets go of the whole
"Sonic on 32X" thing, a whole lot of fun opens up. I really dig it, and
have played almost to the end. Some of those levels are just
unreal...and the graphics(transparency!)...incredible.

>> -KKC, digging on Operation Darkness.

Ugh...tried the demo, it just wasn't for me. Sad

> I'll keep an eye out for that one. There were what 50 games made for
> the 32x?

39 games were made for the 32X, 3 of which are import-only(and can't be
played on your US 32X unit). Honestly, I find the ratio of quality
titles to be very high out of that paltry number...with most games being
the definitive versions.

> I need to figure out what else to buy from the guy. He has a Saturn
> in the box for $50.

That's a good deal. If you find that you're getting in to it,
NCS(ncsx.com) still does region modding(allows you to play Japanese
titles, which opens the Saturn to over 1000 more titles than the US
had). Anyone who knows anything about the Saturn will tell you that if
you're not importing: You're only getting a small part of the
experience. It's ridiculous how few games showed up for the Saturn on
the US when you think about the number that hit Japan. It's sad, really...

Now that I've played the real game, I can say that the demo doesn't
represent the game well at all. It's really just Shining Force, with
vampires and werewolves and mostly ranged weapons. The demo stuck you in a
crowded, challenging urban environment with no good way to see what you
were doing. The real game eases you in by making the first few missions
happen in big, wide-open spaces where it's easy to see everything. I got
it on sale at Amazon for $20, so it was worth that money at least.

I'll see about putting Black thorne up for trade or sale if I decide I
don't like it. Right now I haven't even tested it. Appparently, I
can't test it out because I have no AC adapter. There's no manual for
that one, but the cart is in new condition. Amazing! Man, I just love
Skeleton Krew. Got my cart on Ebay a couple of years back. Great
title.

Well, you don't have to buy a Genesis 2 unit, you just need an AC
adapter that goes with one. They are identified by having a yellow ring,
I believe, around the tip that goes in to the unit.

Ah, I see.

I know for Robo-Aleste, at least, I did much better by just power up the
shield things(yellow). I actually went through the entire game on 1 man
at one point due to the excellent, all-encompassing protection they provide.

Like I said, it's one of the best Genesis games out there...and it was a
near-launch title, so virtually *everyone* had it, or wanted it. You'll
have to compete with those people(who probably sold off the game back in
the day, foolishly) and the new comers who have heard/read so much about it.

Trust me: Unless you just enjoy dry reading, you'll be alright with
cart-only on this one. Wink

There's certain aspects of the game's information bar up at the top of
the screen that I never figured out what was being represented. And
sometimes you can absorb a hit without dying, sometimes not. It isn't
a particularly hard game to learn, but there's a few things I never
figured out.

Do you remember if I mailed you an ac adapter with the Game Gear that
I traded you?
Perhaps I still have it. I need to take a look around and see what I
have got. They sure aren't all that cheap on ebay.

Wow. Kolibri looks super rare. And I can't even believe that they
made Starfleet Academy for the 32x. I thought it was only an snes
title.

Alright, I had a chance to try out all the games (briefly).
Easily the 3 best are Kolibri, Tempo, and Black Thorne.
Kolibri is very exotic. I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do, but
it's quite aesthetic and relaxing. Tempo is *ADORABLE*. And Black
Thorne looks to be awesome. I can't wait to spend more time with it.

Doesn't the 32x have an ON/OFF switch or something. How do you know
when it is safe to unplug the ac adapter?

The 32x is not on when the host Genesis system is not on. One power switch
activates both units, and the 32x is fast enough to detect when an
ordinary Genesis game is inserted for purposes of the pass-through slot
functions. You're good.
