"Flag Camping"?

Last night, I played some UT99 ctf online to see if I could find some
maps I haven't gotten from FileFront. As I spawned into one map, I
get a message telling me not to flag camp.

I know that camping in Last Man Standing is where you hide out and let
your opponents kill each other, then "win" the game by finishing off
the real winner. That's not fun. (I hate how UT2004 tells me I'm
camping when I'm playing bots, and there's only one opponent left, and
it's easier to wait until he comes to me.)

And then there's spawn camping in dm where you stand near a spawn
point and kill everyone as they respawn, while they don't have any
real weapons to defend with.

But "flag camping"? You mean, when I stand near the flag and shoot
any enemy team member who comes into the area to take the flag? I
call that basic defense.

Next thing you know, they'll ban "control point camping" in
domination.

Back when Jedi Knight 2 was new, I played on a public server. I was
so horrible, my tactic was to take up a position near the flag. When
an opponent came in to grab it, he'd focus his attention on me,
leaving himself wide open for the other defender.

It's just my opinion, but I think "poor sportsmanship" is way overdone. If
it's a team game and you are in the opponent's base they have every right to
use whatever defense tactic they can to protect the objective. About the
only caveat I have with that is when it's an insta game and someone is
obviously targeting the objective in wait for you to touch it. That's kinda
lame BUT I don't call people on it. Part of defending.
