I was in GAME today (friday 14th) and they were selling the game. Two young
lads bought one each in front of my eyes. £27.99 they were taking for it!

So how many days after release is that this time? It isn't even funny
anymore. FM2009 has just entered my 'Definate No-Buy' list. Might
check out the demos of CM or Premier Manager as I do still want a new
management game.

Where did you get yours from? I've not seen it cheaper than £27.99 so far.

Getting a patch out on release day is fine but it is always what kind
of patch. If it is like mega-sized not much smaller than the full game
then people would have cause for complaint. But then, the dev guys can
always roll out the excuse, legit or not, the patch needs to include
all the improvements made since the gold candidate. And with high-
speed unmetered INet, fewer are complaining.
Mind you, the real grumble would be releasing a patch to patch the
patch one day after the first patch was released and releasing yet
another patch to patch the first two patchy patches. (Hey, it happened
before! Twice!)

Ah, but it IS the official line that patches are now savegame
compatible (with a tiny disclaimer to the contrary as a footer in the
readme).

I don't see why people are bothered with this. The physical release of
the game is based on code probably a month old. Hundreds of thousands
testing the demo will always discover bugs that no in-house or automated
testing ever would. Would it be better if they waited for another month
with the patch release? Would you feel it's a better product then?
Releasing the patch on the very day of the release of the game at least
saves you the trouble of starting a new game after the patch, which is
sometimes needed for the patch to have full effect.

I paid £29.99 for mine from play.com and they delivered it late. Not
impressed with play.com Sad

thehut.com

preordered it months ago for £17.93, and they bumped the price up to
£24.93 not long after.

i did think they'd cancel my order, but they didn't Smile

That is a good argument...but is negated by the fact that there will
be at least 2-3 more patches (bug-fixes, not updates).

to be fair to SI, they have improved a lot in this respect, i mean
fm08 only had, what, 2 patches?

when you think back to CM3 and the multitude of patches that game
needed that's a massive improvement!

Sure there will, all software gets patched, that wasn't the point here.
My point is that you can't judge the quality of the product simply from
the date a first patch is released.

Patches really stopped being patches years ago, they're now new versions
of the game. They don't just replace small bits of the original program
anymore, they overwrite it with a new one (and in FM's case the exe is
27Mb). FM patches also usually come with a data update, so when you add
those two up, it will get pretty big.
