Post subject: (F3) What a complex game!
Archived from groups: alt>games>fallout, others (more info?)

In Morrowind and Oblivion, I just put on my best armor and took my
best weapon and went out to solve quests and kill and loot and
pillage. Up to a point, I knew what to put on because silver was
better than steel and steel was better than iron. Simple. Well,
perhaps a little more complex than that because you have to work out
what your best magical items were.

But in this game, you've got to take a lot of different armor and
clothing with you so you can decide what to wear in the rapidly-
changing situation.

For example, for your headwear, you must remember to wear your Shady
Hat in situations requiring you to sneak, or lockpick, or set
explosives, or use energy weapons. You must remember to wear your
Hockey Mask in situations where you're fighting unarmed or melee, and
your Raider Blastmaster Helmet in situations where you're using Big
Guns and Explosives, and when you get Button's Wig, you must remember
that although it boosts your barter, speech, science, repair and
medicine skills, it also drains your explosives, lockpick and energy
weapon skills. And of course you must remember that in your inventory
there are many drugs that temporarily change many of these skills too.

And what do you wear on your body? When you want to repair your stuff,
remember to put on your RobCo jumpsuit. Or if you're getting poisoned
by radiation, switch to your Environment Suit which boosts your
medicine skills and your radiation resistance. If you see a monster,
choose your weapon carefully to exploit his weaknesses, take drugs
which best suit the situation and put on your Recon Armor for
sneaking, oh wait, he's seen you, switch to the Ranger Battle Armor
which protects you better and gives you a boost in small guns, action
points, and a tiny boost to everything else, then select your
headwear... no, wait, make that the armor that gives you a boost in
big guns, you can take him out quicker. He's dead? Fine, loot his body
and put on your Labcoat to pick the safe and those three locked boxes
behind him, then switch to your science boosting clothing to hack the
computer next to them, and there's a travelling salesman so put on
your Sexy Sleepwear which gives a small boost to your barter and
speech skills, no wait, there's someone else. He's friendly so switch
from your Sexy Sleepwear to your Naughty Nightwear because that gives
you a huge boost in your speech skills and a tiny boost to everything
else, and... No, wait! Here come some more monsters! Argh! It's a
couple of Yao Guais and a Deathclaw! What do I wear now???

Do you NEED to have optimal equipment to do well, or is such
fastidiousness 'optional'?

That's exactly how it plays. In Oblivion and Morrowind, I did take care
to optimise my outfits but the weight was such that I usually did that
at home.

Well, it's absolutely true that those items do give those particular
boosts to your stats, just as described. And I've been using them in
those ways, swapping clothing to give myself a boost in whichever
skill I'm about to use. But it's getting a bit complicated, so I'm now
considering whether to just keep the stuff which gives me the biggest
boosts and sell the rest. This is my first game of F3, so I'm still
sorting out my priorities.

Totally optional. When you start off with a skill of 5, having
clothing that gives you a 5 boost to 10 is effective. But when your
skill is 66 anyway, like my repair, boosting it to 71 isn't going to
make that much difference, I guess.

That's exactly how I play as well. If I was obliged to micromanage like the OP described, my copy of
F3 would be sitting on the shelf gathering dust by now, and I'd be bitter about having wasted sixty
bucks on it. Like in MW and Oblivion, good enough is good enough, and the relatively miniscule stat
changes you get from wearing this outfit or that hat might help a little, but aren't required to get you
though the day.

If that's how the OP wants to play, then great. The beauty of these kinda games is that you can play
them however you want, and still have a great time.

> F3 sounds much more "linear" than Oblivion--where you can pretty much

I've been ignoring it for weeks, doing side quests and exploring instead. F3 isn't more linear than
Oblivion. If anything it's less so. In fact, I actually managed to 'short circuit' the main quest by
finding a certain person much sooner than I should have, through exploring the map. Rather than go
along with this person and finish the main quest (which ends the game) I told him/her (don't wanna
spoil it for ya) to buzz off and I now know where to meet this person later on when I'm finally ready to
continue on the MQ, which isn't going to happen real soon. Now there are places I no longer need to
go to in order to complete the MQ (but I will anyway) and things I won't have to do. There's a raging
debate on the Bethesda forums over whether this is a bug or a feature and whether the devs really
intended for this to happen.

F3 has fewer quests than Oblivion, but they are more complex and usually have multiple ways to
complete them. The choices are often murkier (in a moral sense) and they do have consequences in
what happens to you later in the game. Sometimes there is no right choice, and sometimes people
are hurt (or helped) no matter what you choose to do. You can play it as a good guy, a bad guy, or
somewhere in between, and things really will be different depending on the type of character you
play.

I'm probably not explaining this very well, really. F3 is a fantastic experience and I think if you
enjoyed Oblivion, and don't mind the graphic gore and bleak view of the future this game offers, you'll
likely enjoy this as well.

I'm on my second run through. I am just wandering the wastelands. I'm using
power armour, and minigun, laser pistol, and chinese assault rifle. I've
almost maxed out my repair abilities, so I'll repair as much stuff as I can
to get a better price for it. Before I got into the power armour, I spent a
very long time using tenpenny tower security armour. On my first go I did
try swapping outfits, but as an earlier post says, this is not essential at
higher levels, especially after you've found several bobbleheads.

F3 main quest is actually pretty pathetic. Im doing the second go
around and ignoring it completely. As for linearity the downtown area
around the Mall is thoroughly chopped up connected only by subways and
sewers the street areas being separated by insurmountable rubble and
impassable buildings. The area outside this is pretty much "sandbox."
This is way too bad as I love FPS in rubbled buildings. It has not
been exploited nearly enough.

However, the Oblivion parenthood is obvious. The side quests are
interesting. Your developed and tagged skills permit more alternative
paths for each.

Recommended.

when Spore came out. Mercifully that that one died quickly. Anyone

I still have it and play it occasionally. But I agree with you. It was
extremely disappointing for all the hype. Yer FO3 had very LITTLE hype
and look how well it turned out.

All the more need for some sort of try-before-you-buy formula in this
industry.

Hehe, yeah the first time I played through I decked myself out in the best
power armor I could find and carried a tonne of guns around everywhere.
Sadly though I found that I'd approach most situations the same way and just
try shoot the hell out of everything I came accross. I'd always feel a litle
bad when I hopped off a mountain of corpses only to find some magical button
in a side room that did something really cool.

My current character I've intentionally "gimped" to make me think a little
more. I started by lowering all SPECIAL stats to 3 and just beefed up his
intelligence/agility - only wearing spectacles and vault suits. So now i
basically have to run away from most enemies (a scorpion and robot conga
line is pretty funny as you're legging it through the wastes) and find more
interesting ways to kill others. Because my strength is so low I have to be
selective about what I scavenge but because my speechcraft/bater and science
are so high i make heaps of money without having to play packmule. This
second character build is much more fun as the game does well to provide
multiple ways to do things. My suggestion is to play a character type that
you wouldnt normally try and dont stress too much about gear - hell, my
brother did most of it in sexy sleepwear and the AntAgonist suit.

Fallout 3 is simply a great game. They kept the turn-based charm of the
series with the VATS system and i'm so glad it didnt become a generic first
person shooter.
