What am I supposed to do with all these elephant condoms. Give them to
a zoo?

They also make good LP protectors!

Put it over your head.

I was just being silly. I'm trashing the elephant condoms and
protecting my laserdiscs that came with them with polylined sleeves I
just got from Bags Unlimited. Seems like they'll do the job better.
But you put me in thought of doing the same for my LPs, which are few
in number next to my LDs.

I've got a lot of these things, because I always repack my LDs into
plastic-lined paper sleeves. While gathering up a big group of them
which has been piling up due to my new acquisitions, I made the
following observations.

1. They are made of a translucent plastic film which I am inclined to
identify as low-density polyethylene.
2. Some have no printing on them. Those which are imprinted bear
warnings, in blue ink & various languages, against stuffing your baby
into an LD player (or something).
3. Some of the imprinted sleeves carry, at the bottom, what I guess
is a stock number, while others do not.
4. There are 3 stock numbers represented : LHP-013-A, LHP-013-B,
LHP-013-C. "B" is by far the most common, with "A" and "C" roughly
equal. All sleeves imprinted with a particular stock number have the
same design, but the designs accompanying the three numbers are
slightly different.
5. Of the unnumbered sleeves, most have the same design as one or
another of the numbered sleeves, but there is at least one different
group.
6. The three groups, unimprinted, imprinted but unnumbered, &
imprinted & numbered, are roughly equal in numbers.

I know this is the stupidest kind of trivia, but I couldn't resist a
straight line...

Heh! Smile

But here's something weird: about 10+ years ago I found the
identical "printing" from one of the "condoms" on the surface
of its corresponding LD, and I couldn't remove it with any of
the solutions I've used to clean LDs. The printing didn't affect
playback, but it's cosmetically annoying. And the printing wasn't
reversed, it read the same as it does on the "condom". I don't
have any of those "condoms" anymore since I always discarded
them after placing the LD(s) in the polypropylene paper sleeves,
and there's no way I can (quickly) find the affected LD in my
collection.

Just another trivia point. Smile

Bags Unlimited sent me a nice catalog with my order of 1,000 outer
sleeves and not enough polylined inner sleeves. I should have ordered
more of those.

Anyway, I just noticed that they sell elephant condoms. Well, they
call them "Round-Bottom 12 Sleeves." Probably they are OK as mentioned
for lighter LPs, but sounds like we all agree they weren't the best
choice for heavy LDs.

Interesting that various studios seemed to use these or the nicer
polylined sleeves almost at random. Perhaps different pressing plants
used different types, I dunno. I noticed my "Star Trek" and "Star
Trek: The Next Generation" LDs are inconsistent as far as what type
was used, for instance.

Except for the blue printing on the "condoms", one would almost
think they were meant to be used only for in-plant handling/carry
of LDs before being placed in the proper poly/paper sleeves.

My recollection is that even Kuraray (arguably one of the best LD
plants) would occasionally ship LDs in the "condoms".

But there's no question the poly/paper sleeves are the best for
storage -- all my LDs are in them as are my LPs.

Heh, LDs aren't exactly "light" to begin with. I remember a
(not) humorous situation once when I was pulling an LP from
its sleeve and almost flung it across the room because it's
so much less massive than an LD. Luckily I have large hands
and was able to actually avoid flinging it even though there's
no large central hole like for LDs -- I reflexively squeezed
my thumb against my index finger before the LP went flying
and was able to hold it by its edge.

Wow.

You obviously have way too much free time on your hands. You must be really
bored. I think you need to find a job, so you can get out of the house a
bit more often. After a post like this one, I think its obvious that your as
crazy as a rat in a plugged up shithouse.

I actually use the EC sleeves. I use them as liners in Tyvek 12"
sleeves.
