"Eidos Interactive, one of the world's leading publishers and
developers of entertainment software, and ValveŽ today announce an
agreement to deliver dozens of new and best-selling PC titles via
Steam.
This first agreement includes complete franchise sets of classics such
as Tomb Raider, Commandos, and many of the Hitman titles. In addition,
Eidos is bringing some of this year's most highly anticipated releases
to Steam, including Tomb Raider: Anniversary, Championship Manager
2007, and more."

That's good news. I might be tempted to buy some games that I've
passed up over the years. Particularly the 3rd person type.
That's got to be good for the industry if it causes people to buy
games.

Not me - not at those prices Rob. The Commandos games are less than a
fiver each at play.com.

Agree with the sentiment but while Valve and Steam get many things just
right the one they do not seem to be able to get their heads around is
competitive pricing. |

Buy the boxed version and do the STEAM install... You have a hard copy
if STEAM ever shits the bed, and you have an install with CD check
removed if it doesn't.
I'm not a fanatic like PCGames, but this is how I've been using STEAM,
and most likely the only way I'll use it. |

It's often quoted in Valve's defence that they do not set the price on
Steam, the publisher/developer does, but you've got to wonder what
pubs/devs are thinking putting a product on Steam at rates sometimes 3
times the current retail, particularly for older titles.
If they honour retail keys on Steam then it's not much of an issue, but
when they don't and the price is kept high for longer on Steam you do
have to wonder how this will bode for the future when retail is
eventually not offered as an option.

Tomb Raider Legend is excellent if you missed out on that one,
although I played that one on the 360 as my aging PC couldn't run it
in "nextgen" graphics mode.

It was good. Played it on the PS2 until the first big boss guy running
around the balcony. I hate boss guys and just gave up Lack of moral

As I said a while back, if Valve make Steam relatively high quality and
developers see a way of getting games out with approx zero cost in terms
of duplication, etc then they will come.
Valve can sit back and rake it in now. They are going to be seriously
well off.
Like it or not, digital delivery IS the way of the future. |

I remember reading an article some time back where Gabe said that they
can flick a switch and disable Steam in that situation: so if they
went out of business with no-one wanting to buy them out, they would
presumably just do that.
But I think the odds of them going out of business and not finding a
buyer for at least that part of the company would be slim. Steam is
pretty well established and has to have a decent value for some game
distributor.

And their games are getting shorter and delayed more and more. Maybe EP2
will be different...

But it need not be in the oppressive auto-update way of Steam. The recent
problems with EP1 show that this is not the best solution.

Maybe the developers set the price at the current retail level and Valve
adds the rumoured 50%(?) for Steam ?

Their "games"? I like them delaying. They produce good quality games.

Then turn auto update off. You have been told this 100000000 times. If
you play ONLINE then you have to update anyway. Why does such an
obviously intelligent person like yourself feel the need to tell so many
lies about Steam? No, Steam is not perfect. But its pretty damn
good. The convenience alone is worth *my* money. You pays your money and
you takes your choie? Dont like it? Dont buy the games. Vote with your
wallet. |

The quality or at least the length of HL:EP1 left a lot to desired...

And you have been told 10000000 times that novices don't know about this
until it's to late and I'm still not clear if you can authenticate a newly
bought game without it updating on the first try to connect to Steam...
