The unit just keeps rebooting every few minutes. I tried unplugging
it for 15 minutes - no good. I tried the 'Reset button' several times,
that didn't work either. Any idea what is going on?
I don't even know if these things can be repaired? I would hate to have
to replace it. I have a 'Lifetime Tivo service' on this unit. I took a quick
look over at Tivo.com and it looks like they don't even make a Satellite/DVR
unit anymore .....
What to do? |

Lifetime TiVo service was never offered for a DirecTV R10 DVR.
If you had an earlier model DirecTV DVR, lifetime TiVo service
may have been transfered to your DirecTV account.
You should contact DirecTV to determine your options. |

Right. The R10 is my uhm.. 3rd machine. I bought the Lifetime service when
I activated machine #2.
Right now I'm thinking of sending my machine off to Weaknees.com
Having them confirm it is probably the hard drive, and having that replaced.
Seems the best route to go. |

Lifetime is on your account with DirecTV, not with the unit. So if the unit is
truely bad, you should be able to get a DirecTV Tivo off ebay and then
activate it on your account. |

If you are going that route, try the full reset first.
And if you are going the Weekknees route, get a larger hard drive |

Originally I was going to send the unit off to Weaknees for a checkup.
But when I described the problem to them they agreed it was most likely
the hard drive had gone bad, and they would not be able to transfer the
information (Programs, season passes, ...) over to the new drive.
(Damn, I had a brand new episode of Dr Who on that drive.)
So I just had them send me a new drive, with double the memory, and installed
it myself. Super easy swap - just removed a few screws, and unplugged the cables.
The hardest part, actually a minor pain in the butt, was going through the guided
setup again and programming in the channels I receive. I wish the machine could
auto-detect what channels I get.
Oh well, I not complaining too much. My SAT/Tivo is working again. It was a horrible
5 days around here with nothing to watch.
Thanks for the help everyone.
