Well I've had my first experience with TAGES DRM today. I bought X3: Terran
Conflict from Steam yesterday. Came to play it this morning to find that I
have to authenticate and active the game. However,
the activation server is offline as far as anyone can tell, and guess what
it's New Years day so there aint gonna be anyone at work to fix it. End
result, I can even load a game that I've just paid for.

The next game I want to play that used this system I won't be buying, I'll
be getting a torrent for it.

Ah, yes. One of the joys of Steam. For many of today's third
party-games, a double-dose of DRM. Steam DRM + Original game
distrbutor DRM.

It would be very simple for Gabe or Doug at Valve to refuse to accept
any third-party games for sale through Steam unless all 3rd-party DRM
was removed first. With Valve's subscriber-base, they certainly have
hug leverage these days, should they choose to use it. However, with
Valve, the easy route to the acquisition of more money is ALWAYS the
#1 priority, with customer-accommodation a non-runner.

I don't really blame team for it, at the end of the day they have to
accommodate the companies that they distribute for as well as the private
customer base. My biggest gripe with steam is that while some game will
download no problem at my maximum download speed (10 mbps) a lot (including
X3) only download at around 200-300 kbps, when you downloading 7GBs of data
it's not really good enough.

Valve are a business - get over it.

Other than that, the game being available on STEAM gives the consumer a
choice. This is better than no choice.

Perhaps it should state that the game depends on online servers to activate
and by omitting that fact STEAM is at fault.

This is the crux of the problem. The publishers are using the internet
against gamers, not for them. They treat us all like criminals, instead of
treating the criminals like criminals.
