I recently broke out my old Dell XPS P100C, running Win 95, etc. Right now,
I'm alternating between 3 games - Star Trek 25th Anniversary on CD, Star
Trek Judgment Rites on CD and Call of Cthulhu-Shadow of the Comet. These 3
were my favorites - along with games such as:
Indiana Jones -Fate of Atlantis
Sam and Max
Day of the Tentacle
Gabriel Knight - Sins
Hand of Fate
Betrayal at Krondor (Not an adventure but still an excellent game)
Twinsen's Odyssey (weird game - not an adventure but still fun)
Anyway, my point is, where did all the good adventure games go. Why did
they quit making good quality games - with great plots? I know, graphics
replaced plot then the console games replaced Graphic Adventure games for
the PC.
Oh well - I'm just glad I can go back and replay the games I enjoy. Does
anyone else do this? Play older games on an old computer or in DOSbox or
SCUMM?
If so, what games?
Just wondering.
Thanks.

What REH said. The subject's been argued over many times.

I can tell you're new around here. Yes, this gets discussed quite
often and many of us play old games. Some of us do have an old
computer. I've got another with 95 on it, and yet another that had
3.1 on it, except it's not working right now. Since two years ago was
the first time I got a new computer in a very long time, I have a
rather large collection of older games because it's all I could play
for a long time. I use Dosbox frequently, have SCUMM downloaded but
haven't used it yet. Oh wait, yes I have -- I started Beneath a Steel
Sky once.
As for *which* games -- oh, lots of different things. Including
Krondor and it's one of my all-time favorites

Sorry to hear about your Spectrum. They were awesome machines. There are
some really great spectrum emulators on the web, though.

I won't agree that no good games are made anymore, but I do have a
bunch of unplayed older games waiting for me. The original Myst, for
example. I started it a while ago, but I've been short on game playing
time. I intend to get back to it now. Ok, it's not DOS and it doesn't
require special tools to run on Win XP, but I think it qualifies as
older anyway, doesn't it?

I agree with the OP on all the titles he listed. They just don't make 'em
like that, anymore.
As a side note: I recently pulled out Gabriel Knight - The Beast Within and
played it on my retro box (PII 333/Win98) and was magically transported to
the halcyon days of adventure gaming.
What really got me was how much fun it was to play, and interact, with
characters in FMV. With today's PC video technology, wouldn't you think
that FMV would be a 'novel' idea for adventure gaming?
Ahh, I suppose it's cost prohibitive with union and SAG costs, anymore.
Wonder how Sierra even it afforded it back then? Or, is that the reason why
they no longer exist as their own single entity? =) |

GK2 Beast Within works on my WIN XP. Still the best FMV game I've
played...and at the time it came out most FMV games were REALLY bad.
They managed to cobble together a pretty good cast of unknowns for this
game.
I think what I miss most about the decline of the adventure genre are
the mystery games. I love watching even trashy TV mysteries like CSI
and the like...but it's even more fun when you get to play in them (no,
not the CSI games, which are dull and generic). There are still a few
good ones released now and again...but they're not as epic and
expansive as they used to be. There was a recent game, Still Life,
which captured the feel of those old adventure games...but you could
finish the game in 8 hours! Those days of spending 15-20 hours on
solving some epic mystery are clearly over. |

I used to take a lot more than 15-20 hours for games like GK2 one of my
faves. More like a few weeks. But I only played those games off and on
like after work or weekends It reminds me of 7th Guest. It took me a
couple of months to play that game mostly due to the microscope puzzle.
I could have skipped it, but I wanted to see if I could solve it, so
tried it now and then and one day managed to solve it. I was
shocked -LOL. I don't work now, but still like to take my time on games.
I liked Blackstone Chronicles and Realms of the Haunting (more
action/adventure) in the way of mystery/horror/adventure games. I would
like to see games like that come out again, but you are probably right.
Mystery games like these are not likely to come back, but I would settle
for some that are even half as good. Also faves of mine was Fate of
Atlantic, Day of the Tentacle, KQ series, Pandora Directive and lots
more.

I still have the 7th Guest and the 11th Hour. They both worked well in
Win98 but I have not tried XP. I remember wanting to get the Creative
Labs Multimedia 2X CD/sound card upgrade so I could play 7th Guest. I
think I paid $200US for the 2X CD/8 bit SB. Now many years later I am
still upgrading (new video card in the mail) to play games!!!

I have the Windows 95/98 edition of The 7th Guest and it runs fine
under Windows XP. I seem to remember there being an EXE out there for
the DOS version that enabled it to run under Windows XP.
....
I looked around a bit and found this info for getting the DOS version
running under XP..

I don't have Win XP, but use Win 98SE and have a Win2K partition. I
haven't tried 7th Guest for a while. I think it worked in Win 98 ok, but
maybe not in Win2K or Win XP. If not, it would probably work OK in
Dosbox.

Now that you mention it, my SB16 sound card was ok for 7th Guest but I
had to upgrade my video card to play it and I remember somebody saying
to me are you going to upgrade your video card just to play one game?
(at that time my computer played all other games), so I said Yes, I am
going to get another video card. I think , though not positive, that I
had a 1 MB video card and upgraded to 2 MB Trident video card, something
like that. There was such a lot of talk about 7th Guest at the office
where I worked, that I felt I had to get it at the time. 7th Guest was
really a pioneer of its time. Nothing touched it for a while. Its a
great game. I liked 11th Hour as well. Not everybody liked it as well as
they liked 7th Guest, but both games were good. They don't make them
like that any more unfortunately -nothing lasts forever

I played Pandora Directive not long ago using Dosbox and it worked fine.
I use win 98SE.
I haven't tried 7th guest or 11th hour though. I heard a while back
about a new 7th Guest/11th Hour game, but haven't heard any more for a
while. I really liked both games and would love to have seen another
one. I feel the same about Tex Murphy. I notice Chris Jones is making a
game but its not about Tex Murphy - too bad. He was really good as Tex.

Hi Mary if you try the 7th Guest and 11th Hour and like them you should try
Clandestiny as I think it was made from the same makers of 7th Guest and
11th Hour, it has the same bone hand for movement and puzzles and riddles.
I have played a little of it and its similar to the 7th and 11th series.

Hi Shaun, thanks but I played Clandestiny when it first came out. Not as
good as 7th Guest and 11th Hour, but stilll quite good. I haven't tried
to replay it for a while. Last time I tried, it didn't work properly.
Too fast or too slow. I forget. I am using Win 98SE but have Win 2K on a
partition. As I recall, it was not for DOS, but for Win 95 I think. I
haven't tried it lately.

Didn't you play all of Clandestiny?
