I played it online for about 10 minutes, MP didn't do much for me, but
SP is one of the best games I have ever played. I am stoked for
COD:MW2 and I don't care about the MP at all.

Fair play to you. I enjoyed it as well, though it was entirely on rails
(which is not my preference).

I don't care much for multiplayer, and I waited until
COD4 was out for a while to play so I could read more
reviews and let the price come down. By then, I knew it
was on rails, short but good action and story, so I was
not expecting much more. The game is a bit different,
like a movie that you take part as the main character.
I would rather play a free roaming game, but this
movie/game was still fun action and immersive (and
longer than a 2 hr movie.)
If CODMW2 is the same (a movie/game) , then I expect I
will still buy it, but probably after user reviews and
the price comes down. |

I can enjoy linear games for the great set pieces they can provide
that you rarely get in free roaming games. Portal for example would
never have been remotely as good if it hadn't been linear.
>How long did it take you?
To be honest I have no idea. Thanks to the Internet I have an
increasingly short span of attention, so usually play games in 15-30
minute chunks, and it took me a couple of weeks on my first play
through on the 360. I sold the 360 version and got the PC version and
played through that in about a week, but I have no idea about length
of gameplay, but it would be over 10 hours I would imagine. But as I
replay bits of it, especially the sublimely satisfying air support
mission, I have got many hours of quality entertainment out of it.
Even if I just played it once, COD4 would have been well worth the
money IMO, it was so well crafted and left me with some great gaming
memories.

I think along similar lines.
Apart from the MP bit and the buying bit.
DICE are trying to make up for past mistakes, so I'll probably spend my
money with them. |

I don't play multiplayer, but as far as I know the pirates are going to
hack dedicated servers for such games anyway, so in the end people who are
annoyed about this could end up pirating the game instead of buying it!

This game has some fantastic sniping missions in part 2. I'm talking
Barret .50 shooting down into a base while enemies catch fire and run
for their lives. You have to deal with the time wasters like malaria
and cross country journeys to get to it, but I think it's worth it. |

I had my savegames with a recent patch 1.0005 I think (only a couple minor
mods) & I initially copied over the game as is to the new box. Ran, but
whenever I saved a game, primarily in the Trader starting area, it wouldn't
load. I've tried a number of things since: update to patch 1.0006, no mods,
reinstall to default dir, etc, etc, no cigar, same issue.
I may try your suggestion as the 2009 Complete mod looks good. I haven't
tried restarting the game as I'd done 20+ hrs of gameplay & just don't have
time to burn, bur maybe it will only take half the time this time to shoot
through the known content. The game is probably worth the effort .

Cool - tx for the heads up. I will get back to this puppy, especially now
you've said that <EG>, but you know, so many games, so little time *sigh*.

Modern Warfare sold a decent number of copies on PC. The total must be
between 2 and 3 million if not more. The PC number you gave is just for
the first two months or so, while CoD:MW continues to sell well even
today. Its MSRP has only come down $10 or so in two years. No other PC
FPS from 2007 sells for $40.
Yes, the numbers are more impressive on the console side, but that
doesn't make PC version sales figures insignificant.
In any case, the more interesting issues is that whether or not, lack
of both dedicated servers and Mod-support are significant drawbacks for
those purchasing the PC version. I doubt it'd be so for 80-90% of the
PC fanbase. Having more options though is always good.

An oldie but a goody - Deus Ex Machina.
Also, perhaps ArmA (either one) if you don't mind using the editor to
create your own scenarios. The first one's SP campaign is not too good
though. |

The original? Gave up in the subway when I couldn't go any further due
to a showstopper bug. But I wasn't really into it that much. It's one of
the few mainstream hybrid shooter I haven't liked - just tried to do too
many things & most of them not well. Clunky engine/responsiveness &
terrible inventory management. And I only tried it 3 or so yrs ago on a
PC far surpassing recommended specs.

I've been looking at Arma, but just haven't heard anything that has
clicked enough to convince me to give it a go. OpFlash2 was high on my
list, but I've heard bleh things about that too now, more's the pity.
I've currently just installed the Stalker Complete 2009 TC. Have to
start over & it's brutal when you're just beginning (even as Stalker
diff), but I can see myself falling in love all over again . I
wouldn't mind a savegame for ver 1.005/6 with this mod around 20 hrs in
(I'll ask in another thread).
Tx for the suggestions dude.

Yeah, played half of the 1st F.E.A.R. & may come back to finish it, even
though it is a corridor creeper/shooter, not much sniping in it from memory.
Is Crysis Warhead a totally different story/setting, or does it follow on?
Tx!

Different story -- same setting (NKA enemies, aliens, Philippine
Islands, 2020). In fact, it takes place parallel to the Crysis story,
just on the other side of the island. You play one of Nomad's strike
team allies -- Psycho.
It could be played independently without any knowledge of the events in
Crysis.
