In the course of my game I was given the "Holy Mountain" quest, wherein I am
told to find the Holy Mountain and then put a city next to it. In order to
help me find the place, I was told to build a bunch of religious buildings.

Okay, I built all the buildings...so how does that help me find the place?
Am I supposed to receive some kind of revelation?

I've never managed to win that quest (too many military units to build to
keep the neighbours away), but if you do, you should simply be notified of
it and get your reward.

you don't win much. it's not my favorite quest. put a lot of effort building
the temples and and the city by the mountain myabe a war to get there,
little reward. sports league or harbor is better.

or even those forges.
holy mountain quest is the least payoff for effort of any quest IMO.

If you build enough of the religious buildings required then a pop up
appears and says something like....

"Congrats, you have built enough religious buildings to reveal the holy
mountain"
Then a visual shot of the mountain appears on the map.

You then have to get the mountain within you cultral boundaries.
A war to take the rival city nearist it or a settler and a new city near it.

As others have said though the reward isn't much, can't remember what
though!

Also, you lose the quest if another civ produces all those religious
buildings before you do. I suppose the quest could be good for culture and
maybe to some extenet researcch (because of the small research bonus from
monasteries), but that's it.
