According to the captions, the owner was having a problem with the
tray not going in and out smoothly. After disassembling it in the
very involved way you see, he discovered that the grease which
lubricates the gear had made its way onto the pulley and was causing
the belt to slip. After cleaning the pulley with alcohol, he ceased
to have this problem. His last note is "This is really too
complicated."
Personally, I wouldn't try to replace the faceplate on a LD player,
unless perhaps it was severely damaged. If there are cosmetic issues
which really make a difference to you, it might well be easier to deal
with them in situ, using toothpicks, silver polish, gun bluing, or
what-have-you. The problem is that the faceplates are generally
fastened on from the back, & it's often necessary to more-or-less take
the machine apart to get them off. It can be difficult to get the
ribbon connectors &c. loose without getting your hands into sensitive
areas of machinery.
