Good lord. Portrait of Ruin has to be one of the best games I've played
on the DS. And with all the aces DS games available, that's no mean feat.

Without spoiling anything, I love how this game links in with
Castlevania Bloodlines, finally explains why the Morris family ended up
with the Belmont's whip, and foreshadows the events of 1999 that are
mentioned in Aria of Sorrow (which is set in 2035).

Clearly Konami need to make this 1999 game. For the DS, preferably.

Apparently Igarashi has absolutely no idea how to actually go about
doing the battle of 1999, despite the fact that he knows the story. I
suspect the problem is that, now that these events have been hyped up in
several games now - as well as it being Draculas last stand - he needs
to make it really spectacular.

The thing is, Castlevania has sod all of a budget. Even as of Portrait
of Ruin, some of the sprites they are using are going all the way back
to Rondo of Blood. Its unfortunate, but the only reason we really get
all the Castlevania games we do get is because they can recycle so much
from one game to the next. Its also the reason why the PS2 games aren't
half as good as they should be (though I still like them, personally).

Personally, I'll just be happy if we get another decent DS game.

Is being warmed up potato good or bad?

I'm loving it. It's Castlevania, but the paintings allow it to deviate
a bit from the standard castle exploration with some different locales,
without resorting to the bizarre areas of Harmony of Dissonance which
seemed to exist for no reason.

Blimey. I never saw any attraction in them to be honest.

Did 895.5% really mean you'd found almost eight times as much map as
required to win the game?

Nah. PoR is split into several different areas, and the game adds up the
percentages for each area into a total.

Still, unless he has finished Sisters and Richter mode he hasn't
finished the game properly, because some of the paintings in the ending
credits are still blank. At 895.5% he probably hasn't done much, if any,
of the bonus dungeon either.

Well, I played DoS before *any* of the other Castlevania games (well,
aside from the NES and SNES ones when they first came out), and my
brane coped Smile

I assume you've bumped into Julius in DoS? If so, he explains a bit
about 1999, although he says more in AoS. Playing DoS first does
cause two minor spoilers in AoS though, one regarding Julius, and
another regarding Arikado.

Bloodlines is the Megadrive game (called "A New Generation" over here,
I think). It's set just after the Dracula book, and stars John Morris
(son of Quincy Morris from the book) and Eric Lecarde. Jonathan
Morris in PoR is John Morris' son. But there's more that links it to
Bloodlines *and* The Event of 1999 in the PoR "story".

Konami had better come up with some bloody ACE game to tell *that*
episode...

Oh, and I haven't tried Old Axe Armour Mode either.

Ahhhhh - that little snippet combined with the in-game encyclopaedia
have filled in the blanks Smile Interestingly, there's rather a nice plot
summary over on wikipedia.
