Hey everyone. I saw a post from many years ago that has the same
details as mine, but I wanted to ask some more questions. I've got a
CLD-D704 that will show "Open" and "Close" on the display but will not
actually move the tray. No noise. No motors spinning or whirring.
Someone posted something about an A/B switch that might have been
shifted in shipping or something. Anyone have any ideas how I can fix
this?
thanks all

Thanks Kurtis. That did the trick. Flipped it back to A and all was
well.

Another question though... after firing it up, the laser assembly
(when I skipped chapters) would move itself forward on its track, but
it seemed like it was having a rough time. It was fairly noisy. Does
any part of that mechanism need to be lubricated or calibrated in such
a way as to make that movement easier? It seemed that the image got
more and more distorted and dirty as the chapter numbers went higher
and the laser got closer and closer to the outside edge of the disc.
I think this might actually be a combination of factors, including the
fact that the disc I was using might be warped. The disc seemed like
it had a wobble to it. How would I correct a warped disc?

Thanks!

Sounds like your tracking is bad. That's not unusual -- if the player
was jostled enough in shipping to dislodge the mechanical parts, it
was undoubtedly jostled hard enough to derange the optical assembly.
Kurtis can adjust that, if there's nobody closer to you, but you'll
need to pack very carefully to get the player to him & back without
the same thing happening again.

Now, warped discs can be fixed. I have had considerable success with
this. You will need a warm day with a clear night following,
preferably with at least 20 degrees Fahrenheit temperature swing,
preferably 2 or 3 in a row. You will also need a glass patio table, a
second sheet of flat glass (you can buy glass tabletops), and a gallon
or two-gallon jug of water. In the morning, you put the disc into one
of those clear plastic U-sleeves and put it on the patio table, in an
exposure where it will get sunlight most of the day, with the second
sheet of glass on top, and set the jug of water out nearby. Noon or a
little after, the glass cover sheet should be quite warm to the touch,
and the water in the jug warm as well ; set the jug down on top of
the disc, about in the middle. Leave the whole thing until morning,
at which time you should take the jug off, & probably either rotate or
flip the disc, or both, depending on the shape of the warp, & repeat
the whole procedure.

The essential point is that the softens the acrylic somewhat,
releasing the residual strains, the weight forces the disc into
conformity with the (extremely flat) glass sheets, & the cooling-off
causes the acrylic to harden up again in its proper shape. While some
people have actually used an oven to supply the heat, this is an
extremely advanced variation, which if not done with utmost care can
very easily destroy the LD. The technique mentiond also works on
vinyl records, but should not be tried on shellac discs (e.g. 78s)
because they are more brittle & do not soften easily -- the likelihood
of cracking is quite high.

Take off the top and look at the front side of the plate at the back of the
mechanism. There is a blue arm on a circular switch that will hit a metal
tab and signal side A or B. Either the turn mechanism is not in it's locked
position ot the blue arm somehow got on top of the tabs verses hitting the
bottom. This does happen but not sure why.

Can it turn over side A to B OK. If it can then either the Tangental angle
or Tilt is now off. The excess noise would just be the player electronic
sync'ing the laser to read the LD properly. Something isn't right. It
would be best to write me at kbahr.DeleteThis@comcast.net as I won't have access to the
newsgroup for a couple weeks.
