Hi everybody!

I recently started to play CIV4 and wonder if I have come to the right
group? I see some CIV4 comments in here but the title of the group could
have fooled me... If you know a group specifically made for CIV4, pls let me
know - if not I'll see you around. Thx:-)

It's the right group. Usenet group creation works at snail speed.

Not entirely true. If there were interest in making a new group,
it'd probably go very fast. I'd be willing to help speed things along for
a Civ IV group... or general-purpose Civilization.

This group seems to have adopted civ IV as well.

When was the last time anyone here played the original though? Must be 5
years since I even played Civ2!

I still play Colonization occasionally, though.

Anyway, having a newsgroup for every new version of Civ seems a bit of
overkill to me. Why not have an alt.fans.civilization group for all the civ
versions, from number I onwards?

Still play it occasionally. In some ways it has very satisfying game
play; I like the way you can modify unit qualities so easily, and
conduct lightning-fast campaigns, impossible in Civ 4.

Tried to do this but can't get it to work using WinXP and a DOS Box.
Any suggestions gratefully received.

I can't find any group by that name.

A general-purpose Civilization newsgroup(including Colonization, which I
still play at times after all these years) would be nice. Go for it!

The creation process is here:

http://www.big-8.org/dokuwiki/doku.php?id=policies:creation

I'd be happy to help you write up a proposal and help get the
group propagated, if the people around here would want to move to the
general-purpose group. I don't *really* want to be the proponent right
now, since I've got quite a lot on my plate, but I'd be happy to help
someone else out. I suspect most of the required work will really be in
advertising the new forum.

(And the name I posted before was just a suggested name.)

I still have fond memories of Civ II, but I suppose that for most gamers
there is no going back, though I know of some people who still swear by it.
(And occasionally someone with no experience of the later versions stumbles
on the original Civ and is gripped by the ancient spell.) I would definitely
not go back to Civ III, despite all the great new concepts and tweaks it
introduced. Civ IV is everything Civ III should have been, and more. Still,
having all civ discussions in one newsgroup would be practical.

> I still play Colonization occasionally, though.

So do I. If they reissued it adapted for more up-to-date computers, and with
some of the more obvious bugs removed, and a more reasonable upper limit for
units and cities [AARGH! "The game has exceeded its limit for number of
units"], and above all without the unspeakably boring ending with the War
for Independence I would be very interested. One could make the War for
Independence a transitory stage before building on towards avoiding/winning
the War of the States.
Also, why not have an alternative to the War of Independence in the form of
managing a peaceful disengagement from the mother country, such as Brazil
had? Or Canada or Australia, for that matter. With advantages and drawbacks.

I still do - but that's because my computer isn't powerful enough for
Civ4.

I hated that, too! Mind you, it challenged you to make new strategies to
work around that limit. Smile

I'd like to hear from some other people here. Would they like a unified Sid
Meier's Civilization newsgroup?
