Got the game installed fine and went to play it. I can get to the beginning
of the game (map/character/etc selected) and then my mouse freezes up, sort
of. The gold sword, which was working fine as a cursor up until this point,
stops moving, but I can tell by watching the screen my mouse is moving, I
just have no cursor, except for the "frozen" golden sword.
I have thus far tried it with both a Microsoft Wireless Intellimouse (5+
version of drivers) and a cabled Microsoft mouse, I always figure using
Microsoft hardware I'll be OK, and always have been until now. Neither
works. I'm bummed, especially since I haven't see any other postings as to
this problem. Any one else having a problem or offering sage advice?
Thanks
Bill |

This is a real long shot, but perhaps try updating your USB drivers if it's a USB mouse. |

I have a very similar problem. While my cursor doesn't "lock", it
flickers like crazy (and you can see a faint "bounding box" around it).
The game is still playable, of course, but it's duecedly annoying. I
had the very same problem in RollerCoaster Tycoon III, and I could
never figure out what was causing it. Beyond that, the game is running
pretty good -- but my mini-map, and "globe view" occasionally become
"glitched" (meaning that some tiles appear as normal, whereas the
majority of them look like scrambled multi-color lines) and I get the
random graphical hiccup, or stutter.
If anyone has encountered this, or has ideas for rectifying it, I'd
love to hear about it( GeForce 6800 GT (256 MB), latest drivers, 1 gig
RAM, WinXP Home (if that helps)). |

Had All kinds of problems fo this nature, although I can't talk about
Civ4, yet.
One kind of thing that can happen is some program (firewall, av) thows
up a requester window and that 'steals' the game's association to the
custom cursor [display] and it doesn't get returned. If you're unlucky
you won't even see the requester because it's behind the game screen.
Some times alt-tabbing a couple of times can fix this, but don't count
on it.
In older HoMM and Warlords titles you could play with custom cursor and
system cursor settings if things went wrong. If there's no such thing in
Civ4 (search the game .ini file, also) , try the mouse settings in
Control panel and/or run dxdiag and see what you can change there. I am
currently not aware of a WinXP setting (via pif) that lets a program
LOCK the mouse, but it may well exist.

Try going into the advanced settings of your video card and taking down
hardware acceleration a bit. I've had this problem in the past.

Maybe you have the mouse set to display a trail in your mouse contol in your
control panel? Certainly the symptoms that you note would cause that
behavoir.
