The idea is simple: it's a cell phone and GPS unit on a collar, with its own
private number. Using caller ID, it automatically picks up when an approved
number calls, allowing you to speak to your dog or cat (but probably dog)
from wherever you are. And with the GPS service enabled, you'll even be able
to yell at them when they've wandered too far from home.
The device, dubbed PetsCell, measures 5 inches by 3 inches and comes in the
shape of a bone. It works like a regular--albeit very basic--cell phone.
Owners call their dog's number, and the phone automatically picks up after the
first ring, putting the device on a speakerphone setting. PetsMobility says the
phones provide a nice comfort for pets who may get lonely while their owners
are away, but that they can also help lost pets find their way back home.
Anyone who finds a stray dog with such a device can simply push a button and
ring the owner's own phone to let him or her know where the dog is.
If the dog barks in response, the owner will hear it through their own
telephone, creating a dog-owner telephone "conversation."

"Beverley Cuddy, editor of Dogs Today, said she believed the dog phone
would sell well. “I think there’s definitely a market for it,” she said.
“We’ve done reader research, and we’ve seen people, when they go on holiday,
they talk to their dogs on the phone and say things like
‘my dog understands my voice’.
"According to the American Pet Products Manufacturers Association,
the USA is home to about 65 million owned dogs. So, if wireless phone
penetration stagnates among humans, there's still a big untapped market."
