A friend of mine has a server running ut2004. He really does not know
what he is doing and as I don't run such a server neither do I. Anyway
the question is, is there any way to stop players who have bootleg
copies playing on the server. More to the point he knows that there are
2 players with the same gid on his server regularly. Now he knows he
could just ban them both but the issue is wider than that, he wants to
ban anyone with a copy which is not a legal one, in so far as he can. A
good way is to ban ANY duplicate GID.
Any ideas?
Many thanks

How are they getting past the central server verification? Duplicate keys
should not work. |

I'm wondering if maybe it's the same player using different nicks?
Because yeah.... they should not be able to get past the central
server. |

I've actually tried to do that. I've run my main box and laptop with the
same key and when I go to the server the second time it gives the "key
already in use" error. |

Maybe the 2 nicks are both using demo-clients, which all have the same
GID, if I'm not mistaken.

Hadn't thought of demos. Ya, that would work, but isn't the some of the
admin (like banning) disabled in the demo? I can't remember. I treid running
a demo server once upon a time but my uplink was too laggy. |

Yes, you're probably right. I forgot you need a demo-server to play
with a demo-client. And a demoserver cannot ban players, so that
probably not what the OP meant.

no its not the same player using different nicks. On this occasion it is
two different players with the same guid. They are playing at the same
time in the same server. It has happened before with he thinks other
players, which is why he wants to go down this route. He could of course
ban the ip address but to ban duplicate GUID (or do I mean GID, bugger
i'm confused now) would be better. Any others would get banned too. Well
thats our way of thinking anyway. Why should I pay for the game and not
others? If we all pay we will get a better deal (well hopefully).

I'm pretty sure its not a demo server but I'll better check anyway.
Could they play if they had a demo version and it was not a demo server?
If the server had only demo maps etc. Although I'm pretty sure its not a
demo server.

There are ways to get around the central ID check, but you have to be
running a non-legit game server. AFAIK there are no ways to get into a
regular game without a legal key and absolutely no way to duplicate keys. |

Maybe we are misunderstanding some thing then. I cant believe that jolt
would use a non legit server. I'll have to ask him to check again.

A pirate server is not a lot of trouble to get running, but you tend to get
a lot of cheaters. Anyone savvy enough to learn how to bootleg a copy of
2004 and get it onto a non-sanctioned private server would tend to have both
the ability and desires to also learn to cheat at the game. Funny thing too
because I've seen a lot of posts in the cheat forums about how to enable
anti-cheat on dark servers. |

Well this is definitely happening. He has rechecked. There are several
players on our server with the same guid. It happens quite a lot too. I
thought this was not supposed to happen. And yes we are using a genuine
copy for the server. It would be good to keep these thieving bastard out.
