I'm sure I'll buy that too but in reality I prefer sims portraying
modern aircraft. In delighted that the next DCS module was changed
from the A10a to the A10c. I only hope that they change the Apache
model A to a longbow as well.
A lot of people prefer lower tech aircraft though - IL2 was far more
popular online than sims like LOMAC/FC. I think the popularity stems
from the ease of gameplay - at its most basic, IL2 online is played
like "air quake" (with proper flight modelling though). This helps to
bring in new players, some of whom will go on to other play modes.
I think that one way ED could increase sales of Black Shark is to
create a dedicated server (apparently they will release one), rent
rackspace in various countries, and run co-op and team vs team servers
(with a cycle of good missions) with easy avionics and flight
model allowed (the current community is fairly hardcore and have
machines using realistic settings). They'd also have to change the way
multiplayer missions are created to allow players to use the
(currently AI) wingman commands for quick communications in the air.
The combat flightsim genre needs lots of new players and a high
quality non-hardcore option would go someway to attracting them. Not
having restrictive DRM on the DVD release would probably also be
required to attract non-hardcore flight-simmers.
