When I press 'pause' - should I get a freeze frame, or a blue screen?
Thanks in advance....

With "pause" -- not "step" -- I get a BLACK frame. Grey actually, the
same off-black screen as in STOP mode. That's the difference between
PAUSE and STILL. Nothing in the D704 ever gives you a blue picture,
except those stupid "SIDE 1" title cards some discs have.

Trying to remember, with some players you have to press step forward or
backward to get the picture on CLV LD's.

Yes, same here on my 704, Grey/Black screen when paused. To get a
still frame you have to press 'step' The blue screen is on 'lower'
models, like the 504.

thats odd, I thought the 704 had trick play features? I have a cld-79
which is basically the same machine and I get a still image when I
pause.

ISTR that 704s can do both, depending on the selected mode.

As several have already mentioned, the only way you get a picture on
the 704 during a 'pause" is if you actually perform a "Freeze Frame"
by pushing "Step" instead of "Pause"
