For my next campaign, I'm thinking of the following house rule:
==
If you are a spontaneous spell caster and want to avoid the extra
casting time for adding a metamagic feat, you can prepare the feat not
for a spell but for a slot of a particular level.
For example, you can prepare Empower Spell on a 7th-level spell slot.
You can then cast any spell of up to 5th level using that slot, and
empower it without adding to the casting time. You can spontaneously
apply other metamagic feats as well, but this increases the casting
time as normal. You can choose not to empower the spell, but you can
still only cast a spell of up to 5th level with that slot.
==
My question is, should all spontaneous spell casters gain this
ability, or should it be a feat all by itself, or should it be a bonus
feature of Quicken Spell? |

There already exists a feat called Arcane Preparation I believe that
allows a spontaneous caster to prepare specific spells, allowing him
to cast a spell with meta-magic as a standard action if he prepared
such. This idea dedicates the slot for meta-magic but keeps the spell
spontaneous. It is arguably better. This idea should be a feat.

Or you could have a spell take up more then one spell slot based on the
metamagic cost. So a 3rd level spell with a metamagic cost of +2 would
use up a third level spell AND a second level spell. Fast and dirty.

In one of the books (either the DMG II or the PHB II, IIRC) is a variant
of the Sorcerer class that does not require the extra time. The
sorcerer has to give up his/her familiar to achieve it, but it works for
me.

Just drop the increased casting time. Sorcerers' restricted spell list and
slower spell level progression is already excessive payment for their
tactical versatility - giving them this will bring them back into balance.
If you feel the need to offset it in some fashion, Baird Stafford's mention
of dropping the familiar is a reasonable choice. It's theoretically possible
that they might feel the loss, and it prevents them from going with any of
the other splatbook "exchange your familiar for something that's actually
useful" options.

Of course, now there'll be absolute no reason for a Sorcerer not to go
into a full casting prestige class, not that a non-progressing
familiar was any hindrance. A BAB and Saving Throws hit are not going
to be a deterrent.

Full-casting prestige classes for wizards or sorcerers are fundamentally
flawed in any case. Spellcasting is 99% of what either class does,
regardless of familiars, so any class that allows them unimpeded progression
at that 99% whilst offering them useful extra class features in addition is
overpowered by default.
