| Is anyone out there still playing the first edition? I'm definitely
showing my age...
And, is the latest edition of D&D (3rd, or 3rd and a half) better? Or
jsut different?
Thanks

Well, some of us are still here.

Different. It's a sort of mixture between D&D and GURPS, with opposed
skill checks and all. It's also putting out an overpriced book every
two weeks (or so it seems) to try to get people to spend more on it.
The plastic miniatures that are meant for 3rd Edition are among the best
I've ever seen, however - not all one color, or with the colors running
over into places they shouldn't be.

I can't really compared with 1st edition, as I'm more of a 2nd edition, but
3rd edition is more or less a completely new system and I would say with more
"epic" characters than the earlier versions.
Some people will tell you it's better, other will tell you that you are
already playing the best version, it's so much depending on your taste. I
think 3rd is more for new players, while the earlier are for people who enjoy
to play.

Check out the forums at http://www.dragonsfoot.org
Luminaries like Gary Gygax, Frank Mentzer, Rob Kuntz and others are
members there and are actively posting. You might be surprised how
actively supported 1st edition still is.

I guess we should point out that without figures on a map to show where
everyone is during combat is a must or else many of the feats becomes kind of
useless.

Still got the books...run a one-shot once in awhile on a lark, but
most of my "serious gaming" these days is in GURPS.

Very different. More complexity, concetration on tactical combat
rather than roleplaying, and an obsession about balancing every
encounter to the specific party, down to the last decimal place.
Oh yeah, and every character can change classes at every level.
But it's not a bad game, really: just a bit of a learning curve for
someone who's used to 1e/2e.

So, does the new 30mm scale make them look horribly out of place
alongside the old 25mm/HO scale minatures?

Not particularly. I've always assumed that most species come in larger
and smaller individuals; the old ones are just a foot and a half or so
shorter than the taller. Having spent a few months in the Philippines I
where I could have held my arms out from my shoulders and cleared the
heads of nearly everyone else on the sidewalk, I wouldn't be bothered by
an even larger discrepancy in size.

The idea is to be more realistic in 3.5. it comes with a lot more
complexity which annoys many people.
If you are happy with what you have, if you don't stick to fency new
modules and have all the books, I would recommend: stick your head in
your first edition dungeon and ignore the hell out of 3.5
on the other hand:
There is a lot of fun stuff around designed for 3.5.
In the end it is your decision. Just don't start to mix up 1 , 2 and 3 .
been there done this. - awful...
Cheers,
Teresa

At first I was really annoyed with 3.5 and wondered how they could louse up
good old AD&D but after I got used to the new system it wasn't so bad. Some
of it I'm not fond of but overall it does make it a little more interesting.
I would suggest you give 3.5 a try and don't forget, you are always free not
to use some of the rules and make up some of your own I still use my own
critical hits and fumbles table even though I honor their critical hits
rules also.

I started playing in the 70's, never liked the "Modules" and we were all
the type that creates our own worlds and such. I still have the first
boxed set and the first edition manuals, even the Cathulu MM. We made
our own hit charts, own secondary classes, etc...
We still play once or twice a year, now with our kids and their friends,
but I still have all of my books, maps, dice from the 70's.
